Amoreena again. The diamond shaped shadows on her bare abdomen and chest are the result of twin and equally powered lights at around two o’clock and slightly in front of her on either of her sides. Kind of a double Rembrandt lighting set-up, if you will. No background or hair lights. It’s okay. There is still separation between her and the black background.

Thoughts?

The shadows you referenced are quite distracting on an otherwise fabulous photo. I would suggest cropping the bottom just below her cuffs to eliminate the shadow detail. As a portrait, I believe this is the best of Amoreena yet. Her eyes, hair, and lips are absolutely gorgeous! The lighting, contrast, and focus in this area could not be better! Shadow details of her jacket contrast perfectly with the black background. She seems deep in thought, looking right at you. I am mesmerized looking at her. It is obvious why you consider her your top model. She says she comes back because it is fun, but I truly believe you enjoyed it much more than she did!

Beautiful woman but I would say it's more a portrait than a nude.

I kind of like the shadows because it looks like she’s wearing one of those sweaters with the diamond pattern under her jacket until you examine the photo closely. I chose the lighting purposely to create those shadows. It’s easy.

As to her coming back for her second, third and fourth shoot because she’s having fun with it, I believe she was. I was very excited about it for multiple reasons:

1. I enjoyed her company very much. She’s a remarkable young lady.

2. I enjoy practicing my art and the creative process extremely.

3. I knew that I’d be working on her photos for years, I have about 1,400 images, so it’s like that gift that keeps on giving.

She is very beautiful, lips, hair and especially her eyes. You’re correct about her eyes, they are hypnotic. Ya, I love those eyes. They can stare a hole right through you. She is really a once in a lifetime model.

it's great when you have a model you can relate to and enjoy her company and personality. Her facial features are remarkable. This shot showing the "diamond pattern" was distracting. Understand what you were accomplishing but not one of my favorites with this young woman.

Well, after looking at the photo again, I see the diamond pattern does appear to be a sweater! I like the effect, and I respectfully retract my suggestion to crop the image. Very creative, and you indeed accomplished your goal elegantly. Thank you so much for the detailed explanation.

I look forward to seeing more of your creative work with Amoreena and all the other fine models with which you have worked. Amanda also seems to be very happy posing and seems very relaxed and comfortable, especially in the "twin" image. It would be interesting to see some of the outtakes of that session such that we could learn some of the challenges you experienced. Thanks for sharing your work, it is most educational and entertaining.

As far as the outtakes, it would mean finding that roll of film again and scanning, so how about if I come across it, I’ll do it. I’ll be on the lookout.

Amanda was very much fun to be around, too. She did pretty much anything we asked of her. I had four shoots with her, I think, and she liked to do try out our ideas or propose her own. The double exposure was a fun challenge and I’m sure it was a lot of work for her. We bathed her in m&ms one time and on another shoot I had her smoking a dried out old cigar that was laying around the studio. No problem with any of that. Another time I had her wear a snorkeling mask and filled it with water and put a small goldfish inside it. The concept was good, but for some reason we didn’t get the best of results.

Each model was different from the next one, as I’m sure that you nude photographers out there can attest to. Not all are fun. Some are very businesslike and not all are game for off the cuff ideas. They ask you before the shoot what kind of photos you are going to do and don’t like to deviate from that. Those models aren’t really fun, but hell, we would shoot ‘em all.

The good news is that you could use the same lighting for copying artwork!

Very nice work, John. I especially like the lighting and shadow patterns. They seem to be a visual bonus to a stunning almost portrait quality photograph.
