At first I thought it was just one more alligator, and not one in a good pose for a photograph. Something of a slightly odd color at the water line caught my eye. Unusual this time of year. Most of the gators born last spring that have survived are about 20 -24 inches long and dark in color it seems. And it is surprising how few alligators survive to adulthood - like in many species. Animals eat the eggs. Lots of animals eat these small gators - herons, hawks, osprey, owls, cara-cara. eagles, otter, foxes, coyotes, bobcat, and even other alligators! Like snakes - I am always surprised to see a snake at the wetlands - it seems that everything eats snakes!

He(she?) was sound asleep in the sunshine! (But probably aware that I was there - and they can move fast, so caution is always a good idea...) The baby was just sitting there. Not sure how protective the mother might be ( if it is the mother), so I didn't get too close.

Almost certain it was the mom, other gators would have eaten that little guy in heartbeat. Great shots by the way.

Love it..! The little gator brought back memories of an early "Leave it to Beaver" episode where he brought home a small gator that he named "Captian Jack".

SB. Where was this? Was it Viera Wetlands. I got to back to the Wetlands once my health improves a little more. Maybe you, Carol Wilson & I could get together for a shoot at the wetlands.
