The clouds gave me a couple of hour break the other night and allowed me to take a few more exposures of the California Nebula in Perseus (Also known as NGC 1499). This is a large emission nebula that is powered by
the 4th magnitude blue star known as Menkib (this is the blue star above the nebula in the in the images below). The star and Nebula are ~ 1000 light years away. The UV light from Menkib excites the hydrogen in the nebula causing it to glow. This image was taken with a 500mm Canon lens connected to a cooled monochrome CMOS camera and filter wheel. As with many deep sky images a number of much more distance galaxies photo bomb the image (See the second annotated image below).

For those interested the exposures used to capture this image include
95 minutes (19, 5 minute exposures) using the Luminance filter
70 minutes (14, 5 minute exposures) using the Red filter
75 minutes (15, 5 minute exposures) using the Green filter
50 minutes (19, 5 minute exposures) using the Blue filter ( the clouds came back and cut shot the blue exposures)
150 minutes (15, 10 minute exposures) using the Hydrogren Alpha (5 nm Ha narrow band) filter See the the third image below for the image using just the Ha filter.

The Ha was added to the red channel to create the LRGB image below.

The second image has those galaxies that I could find in my sky map circled (Note: There are many other small galaxies in the image but they where not in my maps). Note use double download to see the distance galaxies.

(- indicates where the data wasn't available) (distance derived from Radial velocity and Hubble constant of
72 km/sec per mega parsec.)

It’s literally Out of This World, Ballard ( But not of this Universe😊). Seriously, wonderful job!

Hi Bubalola
Thanks for viewing the California Nebula photo and for the comment. Yep it is out of this world and solar system at around 1000 light years but still close cosmologically speaking.
