Should they sign a contract

I am doing a photo shoot and I am concerned about being paid. I am thinking of asking for a retainer amount (about half) and then the remainder at delivery. Are there any CONTRACT FORMS for photo shoots that I can download?
Or is a handshake good enough.

Most photographers have contracts on their sites, pick one and change the wording

I always get paid up front

I would definitely get a contract signed. Depending on what kind of photoshoot you might want to get most of the money up front.

You can't get hurt using the "No pay, no play" method.

Definitely get a contract and get paid upfront...I made the mistake when I was involved in wedding photography of permitting payment on delivery.... Big mistake...Huge.. (as Julia Roberts says in Pretty Woman).. Trying to get paid after the event proved to be a nightmare..

I'll add that getting paid should be a priority, since some folks thinking paying their photographer is a low priority.

It's extremely easy to collect a credit card payment wherever you are using a smartphone and and credit card reader. I signed up with Intuit and got a Intuit GoPayment Card Reader for free. It attaches to my smartphone and allows me to scan the credit card's magnetic strip.

Intuit has no monthly service charges nor minimums, but you do pay a 2.7% transaction fee. To me that's more than worth it to make sure I have my money, and don't have to go through a billing process, waiting for my money, sending out dunning notices, depositing checks in the bank, etc.

Getting paid is now easier than ever.

For friends, a handshake should do; if they welch--they are not friends. For companies, a contract is in order. alyn

You know, I've found that friends frequently give the most abuse ... not intentional, perhaps, but they are more prone to break a shoot-date, expect that you'll give a discount or freebies, offer more "advice" instead of allowing the photographer to direct the process, etc. I don't think they mean to be this way, but the friendship relationship gives them a familiarity that doesn't exist when dealing with strangers: to strangers, it's more of a business arrangement, and they expect you to be a professional and offer more respect up front, than friends do. I suppose it's possible this just happens with MY friends, but I would suspect that it is fairly common ....

If you are concerned about being paid, I don't think a contract is going to help. Perhaps money up front is the way to go.

Your're right Photo-Al! There are a couple friends involved and I am being very careful about the friend to business relationship. Sometimes it's like walking in a mine field.

I use to have a favoret saying,

"When it get's to be your turn, they change the rules"

So, advice well taken... Thanks
