Not much gear?

I notice in gear threads most of the time people own several camera bodies, masses of lenses, masses of other accessories and it’s often high end expensive stuff.

So I’m thinking, surely users with entry level cameras, those who only own a single body and maybe one or two lenses are the most common types of photographers. Where are they? Surely not everyone here is rich?

I’d personally enjoy reading about these people’s cameras, adventures, thoughts and experiences more often. Just sayin

I agree! But I do understand that is a minority view!

Have bought all but one camera and two lenses used over a considerable period of time at great prices, always after they were a bit obsolete, but still excellent. Did the same with racing bicycles in other days. Your money goes a long way and you get great gear. I've been fortunate enough to be able to keep it all.

They're afraid the gear-heads will try to convince them to spend money and "upgrade"?

Hmmmmm.
I'm still using a T1i and an H-1.
It would be nice to get another <particular> camera,
but I don't NEED it, can't justify it.

Reasonable thought and question. But, remember the community membership being questioned. The average age is what? Retirement, post-retirement? The young and active can't sit around through a pot of coffee every morning arguing about filters, sensorsize, mirrorless, why Canon isn't the best brand for everyone, and spelling.

Same for me, except that your bicycles would be my bass guitars. I refer to my choices of photo gear as “trailing edge technology”. Therefor I also proudly call myself a scavenger. Any ecosystem will collapse if the scavengers disappear. We are existentially crucial to survival of our respective larger groups. And vice versa, so sincerest thanks to our opposite type within the system, the early adopters of leading edge tech :-)

My musical skills are nonexistent - in grade school the music teacher finally asked me to pretend to sing in the Chorus Show.

How else could people be glued to the forum during the day,
unless they work nights, own their own business, or waste time at "work" perusing UHH.

I am not rich. I have to save up for the items I want and usually put them on my credit card. I do research the items extensively before I make a decision to purchase. I prefer to buy the higher end lenses and cameras because I want the quality and durability. This usually means waiting several months before I can purchase.

As an example, I wanted a Nikon D810 and during research found that the D750 was a great camera as well and hundreds less. So the debate about which to purchase was on. I even inquired here on UHH as to opinions and experience with both. Finally, I decided on the D810 and started saving. When I was almost at my savings goal an unexpected expense took part of those funds. With the funds I had left I purchased the D750 and absolutely love it but I still wanted the 810. Then along came the 850 so I debated it instead of the 810 but with the cost of the 850 and the cost of the XQD cards I decided that I wanted the 810. After more research and opinions from UHH members on refurbished products, I purchased the 810 (refurbished with only 176 shutter clicks) and I love it as much as my 750 which now works alongside the 810.

At this point in my life I feel I have all the lenses and camera bodies (I still have my D7000) that I will need for quite a while. I do believe it is the photographer that makes the photo sand as with anything the right tools are essential.

I don't think it's about being rich, but the accumulation of gear over the years and not wanting to part with it.

We recently purchased a second home to be near a grand child. This place is tiny,,,like living on a small boat. Less than a third the size of the Winchester House we live in normally. I gotta say, I enjoy the smallness of it. It is comforting. And I think it is quite possible that I may enjoy photography more if I also downsize to a small M43 body, a few lenses and try to make art with that. I wonder if those of us with a few bodies, a basket of lenses, ten camera bags and five speed lights are missing something?

Like not having to figure which, body, which lens, which flash, which combo, which bag(s), which ...

I enjoy having one body and carrying one lens.
Life if simple.
