Why do they call them Acorn Woodpeckers?

According to iBirdPro, "The Acorn Woodpecker stores nuts in individually drilled holes in trees calledd granaries. The acorns are jammed in so tight that even squirrels can't pry them out."

Thank you Larry...yes I have a granary and nesting stump (60t tall) right by my house. I have been learning so much just watching them. They come down to my fountain & hit the suet blocks almost daily. Thanks for the input!

LOl...you got it! They really have packed in a lot of nuts this year! I expect a long cold winter if the signs are right! I was just taking Oak leaf pics in their pretty golden phase when I spotted some movement way up there....couldn't tell if it ws an Acorn until I zoomed in on the pic!

Wait! Whaaat? iBirdPro hasn’t met my squirrels. I swear there is nothing beyond their theiving capabilities! (And I love them!)

Thanks Marg for stopping by. Pretty common out here in Oregon & Calif. and very comical looking! I love them all around me here. I learned they live in communes & share raising the young!
