After a recent visit to Wyoming's Yellowstone I learned something very interesting about these critters, specifically their name, or correct name. Actually, they are Bison, and not even related to buffalo, as in the water buffalo. Apparently, when first seen by French explorers they referred to them as du bœuf which is French for beef, and you can see how that French word eventually morphed to buffalo.

OK, I'm game, not quite what...I read through it and the only thing I saw is that they may be in the same family with cows goats, sheep, antelopes, water buffalos, pigs. and all other even-toed animals, etc
And I just now pulled this off google "Though the terms are often used interchangeably, buffalo and bison are distinct animals. Old World “true” buffalo (Cape buffalo and water buffalo) are native to Africa and Asia. ... Both bison and buffalo are in the bovidae family, but the two are not closely related."

LOL, folks also call the Pronghorn an antelope and that’s one hundred percent inaccurate. I mention this only because they are quite common in particular to the Yellowstone area.

Customs and usages of the English language sometimes change what we believe is true. Rioters vs Protesters
