online software

when downloading software online is a serial number assigned to the product at that time? I ordered LR Classic a few years ago at a very reduced price and it works fine as ordered, but updates are not available w/out the serial number. I'm thinking this could be by design at this price and not being a direct buy from Adobe. I was hoping to get the masking update. My shortcoming by not saving the order, but thought it might be worth asking. Any cat-skinners out there? :-)

Your payment receipt (email) should have the serial number. That's the type of documentation you save, like receipts for your camera equipment.

The masking update applies to the ongoing subscription software. Any standalone copy purchased as v6 or earlier would not be updateable / upgradeable to the newest / current software.

On of the many reasons that Adobe went to a subscription model was world wide piracy of their stuff. Curiosity is killing me. What version did you get and who sold it to you?

I'm 99% sure that a fresh version 11 copy of Lightroom Classic would look at the old, existing catalog and update it as needed. In other words, it IS upgradeable.

You can parse my statement, but you're changing the common 'upgrade' meaning as well as the OP's specific request.

Would the subscription be discounted to an existing LR owner? No.

Would the masking feature be downloadable and applied to the LR6 software? No.

Does the LR11 software 'upgrade' the existing LR software? No. The subscription software installs into an entirely new folder with all new executables. To even 'use' the existing LRCAT, all the data is read from the old and migrated into a physically new LRCAT in a non-reversible manner, although all the existing LR software and LRCAT remains in-place and unchanged.

Did I somehow step on your toe? Many of your posts suggest you have a strong aversion to paying Adobe anything for anything. The political UHH left wants to give money to Adobe in exchange for benefits. The political UHH right is convinced there is robbery involved. It is like believing, or not believing, that there are microchips in your covid vaccine!

I am a strong proponent of the Adobe Photography plan because it is so loaded with fun, useful and challenging stuff. It always gets better. You seem to continue with the idea that all improvements past version 6 are some sort of corporate extortion. And that's OK if it works for you. In this case, the OP wants the new masking features. And, yes, some think the new tools are amazing!

If the OP wants, or can use, the new stuff, he/she needs to decide if their hobby/profession is worth $10 a month. It is not that hard unless you have an extraordinarily tight budget where everything fun has to be free. There are options for that!

Lightroom 6 and previous, Classic or whatever version has always been upgradable, updateable and improvable, or what ever you want to call getting a current version.

Those numbers are a nuisance. I keep a list of them on my computer. If you can't find the number, you should contact the company.

I have a program that keeps track of automotive data. Every time I want to install it on another computer, I have to contact the seller and get a new number. That's a real nuisance, especially if the company goes out of business.

Your ire seems misplaced. It’s the OP that was looking to get an update without a subscription. There was nothing in Paul’s response indicating he was anti-subscription model.

You're right. Too late to delete or edit.
