I think I've discovered a weakness in the Kindle Fire. The power button stops working. That happened six months ago with my 10", and now my son's 8" won't turn on. If I plug it in, it will start. When it goes to sleep, it will start if I unplug it. I see no way to open it up to look inside. If I try to pry the screen off, I know it will crack.
I'm going to try this. If you're not familiar with iFixit, it's a great resource for both tools and directions.

I had a kindle that stopped charging, took it to a computer store, they could find nothing wrong. Worked when they reassembled for a few days. They did not recommend trying again. As others have noted for phones, etc. many of these devices are not made for repairing. They did fix the charging port on a 12" Samsung pad, but that was only possible because it was a separate board. Told many require micro-soldering to replace.
Good luck and have fun;

I have opened my 8" Kindle to replace the battery. You just pry it open, if memory serves, the back comes off.

I'm going to open my son's 8" Kindle. If I can't get it working, there are power buttons available for less than the cost of a new Kindle. The 8" Kindle is available for $44 now, though.
My 10" is still usable, but I have to connect or disconnect the charging cable to get it to work.
Thanks. I ordered one yesterday. That's a very good price.
