I purchased a used Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8E ED VR lens yesterday from a local camera store. The sales rep said the lens was a display unit that sat in a large behind the counter display case in another one of their stores. Cosmetically the lens is spotless both externally and internally; absolutely no dust. The sales rep said they couldn't sell it as new because the box and accompanying paper work and other content had been lost but for all intents and purposes, it's a brand new lens. It certainly looks brand new. Anyway, I paid $1500 for the lens and was wondering if I got a good deal. I know they retail for up to $2100, but that's with the box and other materials and factory warranty. I'm not concerned much about the warranty because I've never had issues with any of my Nikkor lenses. The lens did come with both caps and the hood.
Well, you know that box is worth at least $500.

I have pretty much all the boxes my gear came in. If I could get that kind of money for just the boxes, I may have a box sale coming up.

Unless I'm looking at the wrong lens, this is 1600 new and 1300 refurb on the Nikon website.
Must be a different one. It's listed at $2099.95 on the Nikon website.

Roger that. I was looking at the earlier, non-VR version.

Would that be an open-box box sale?👹
That would have me crying all the way to the bank

I bought the same lens earlier this year from a regional dealer. Paid $1400 for it, and thought I got a screaming good deal. It's become my "go to" lens on my D810. Love the image quality. Mine came with the box, papers, etc. So, in that respect, I may have gotten a better deal!

Assuming the lens you bought was in as good of condition as the one I bought, you definitely got a better deal. Still, I'm quite happy with the lens so far. It is a wee bit heavy, but then I'm use to carrying a Canon EF 28-300L.

While I'm skeptical.
The sales rep said the lens was a display unit that sat in a large behind the counter display case in another one of their stores. ???
If the lens is in like new condition it is a real good deal.

It's worth more than that actually! I paid less than half price for a brand new 24-120 f4 because I accepted it without a box. In the end I got a box as well but in order to get the box the lens and box serials don't match. Fine with me. I still have a box and a lack of matching serials saved me a fortune. Who cares!
It's a long story but the boxes can be worth a packet. It's ridiculous!

I've done business in that store several times. Although I don't know how often the lens was removed from the display case, he was making the point that it was not a demo lens that was handled by many potential customers.
The lens is spotless. No fingerprints on the barrel and no debris of any kind on the focus or zoom ring grips. Not a speck of dust inside the lens and no obvious signs of handling at all. It looks like it just came out of the plastic bag it was packed in. If the sales rep was spinning a tale about the lens, he didn't really need to. The condition of the lens speaks for its self. Too bad I bought it in PA and not DE.

I guess it was a good thing saving all those boxes; if I ever decide to sell off some of the stuff I no longer use. Besides, I had this big empty shelf in the basement that was perfect for storing all the empty boxes. It gives the shelf purpose. Who would of thought a worthless cardboard box could increase the value of something.
