For a few weeks in the year Steller and California Sea Lions come to Cowichan Bay on Vancouver Island to lounge about on the docks and for the abundant Chinook Salmon that come from the nearby Cowichan river. This year the count is about 300 animals. They are also found in other locations on the island.
They are very noisy and smelly and not everyone appreciates them being there. The local hotels offer ear plugs.
The lighter coloured Steller males are huge animals weighing between 1000 and 2500 lb and can be very
dangerous if approached too close. They eat about 6% of their body weight in squid, octopus and fish daily.
That's about 150 lb a day for a big one! California Sea Lions are darker in colour and smaller.
Last shot taken from the ferry on the way to the island from the mainland.
