...ma would come and whup me back
on them trestles down by ol' Jim McKay's..."

Ten points will be awarded to the first person who can name the song these lines were lifted from. (An additional five points will be awarded to whomever not only correctly cites the song's author, but manages to somehow mention the covers Marcus Mumford and/or Big Thief's Adriene Lenker have done.

Other'n that, you might wanna be careful if you go playin' on the tracks....

"You can hear that whistle blow a hundred miles...."

Beautiful work. That first shot should be in textbooks to illustrate leading lines, Jim.

Nice shots. The first one clearly shows shiny steel meaning active line and not the tracks you want to stand on. Been there, done it, but it is still not safe. Where I am you are legally supposed to stay 9 feet from the tracks.

I played on the tracks as a kid in West Virginia. Those big Mallies thundered through pulling a load of coal and their whistles really blew. It was really exciting. We put pennies on the track and watched them being mashed. My kids, now in their sixties, admit they played on the tracks, too. Your pictures, especially the first, bring back gond memories.

Those were the days, put a nickel on the tracks, came out the size of a 50 cent piece. Anybody out there remember 50 cent pieces? That was in Fairbanks back in 1956, back in the olden days when kids could have fun.

Hard to say which would be worse: gettin' busted for playin' on the tracks or gettin' whupped by ma (again). Guess it was lucky for me that there weren't no Law around, and neither was Ma. Especially since this particular train didn't have a whistle, it had some sort of air horn that blasted like a herd of billygoats in heat. (Or would that be billygoatesses in heat? Don't know a lot about train track laws or billygoatses.) But I do know I can hear that 'whistle' (horn, whatever...) blow from where I am, and that isn't any hundred miles away.

And I've shot the shot before, too. Like a lot of folks probably have. Who hopefully didn't get busted. Or if they did get busted, either got a good lawyer or had some friends come and bust 'em outa the slammer.

Very nice pictures. Been there, done that (played on the tracks.) I've never been 500 miles away from home with no shirt and no penny. Keep your points. Your first reference I do not know.

Oh heck yeah I remember fifty-cent pieces, but maybe not from when I was a kid exactly. A quarter was probably as big as my portfolio got while I was a kid. But put a nickel on the tracks 'n have 'em squashed? No way! A nickel was big money! You could buy a whole Zagnut bar with a nickel, or maybe a whole SodyPop! Pennies, on the other hand.... one or two of those could be sacrificed now and then just for kicks.
