I was work in my shop this morning I noticed a noise in the front to back feed so I decided to check the bearing on the shaft, couldn't get the Allen wrench in the set screw so I turned the air compressor on finally got enough air pressure up and blew the crap out of the set screw and started to remove the retain nut , when all hell broke loose, the compressor set in attached lean to shed against the back wall in the shop, air blew through the shop and the compressor stopped running, I opened the door to the lean too and this is what I found.
I got this compressor some time in mid 1990s free because the motor had burned up, I put a new motor on it and have been using it "lightly" every since, at first I thought the shut of switch had stuck and the safety valve had failed, after I settled down and was waiting for my grandson to come help me, I remembered that it had not run long enough to shut off, Then I look at the tank closer and found it had rusted and the bottom had blown out.
It was bolted to the floor but all three anchor pulled out of the concrete. I was lucky no one was in the shed when it blew. Its amazing what 100# or less of air pressure can do.
Oh well I wanted to redo the roof to match the shop roof and rewire the electric box now I have too!!
The wiring at the box and in the shed is a nightmare.
Man, glad you weren't near it!
Quite a mess. I glad no one was hurt. Good luck with the cleanup and rebuild.

What a mess. Glad you didn't get hurt. Sometimes it takes a near disaster to get me to do things.
Someone up there likes you. Now you get to put in what you want. You were lucky

Yep it is a mess, Thank you ken.actually the roof was leak free. It's just the ceiling is so low and the wiring is terrible, the shed was built but a midget !!!

Yep I was lucky, I was planning on doing the roof next spring.

Wow! The last time I drained the water from my large compressor, I felt some bubbling in the paint under the bottom near the drain. I thought it might be the beginning of rust as I’ve been sort of sloppy about draining it as I should. I just passed it off, but after seeing your disaster, I’m thinking I should either replace the tank or have a reinforcing patch welded over it
Oh dear sorry to hear what happened to your place. Thanks for posting this its given me the heads up I'm going to drain mine this morning.
