Ouch! Repotting challenge

Just purchased this pachypodium plant yesterday from our local ACE Hardware store in Cocoa Beach - they have arrangements with some great plant people who supply them with various exotics, including orchids, that are always really healthy. Not the usual plants at all....

Potting it was a challenge. I am not sure what will happen in a year or two when it outgrows this pot and I need to repot it! Will also have to divide it then. I think I will need tougher gloves!

Might need Welder's gloves. Nice plant!

We have a kind of low lying cactus that one of the dogs occasionally steps on. I have yet to find a glove the spines won't pierce, up to and including wildland fire fighters gloves. What I use is either a sort of improvised strap wrench or forceps. I would handle that plant with straps and rope or tongs like those used for crucibles.

I like them - very interesting - like cactus, except with pretty leaves. They have a cluster of white flowers on a stalk from the top of each stalk.

Wow Doc, at least you can treat yourself for any injuries!

It certainly doesn’t look like a friendly plant! I think I would have put it in a large forever pot on the first ground.😁

These thorns don't tend to come out and stick in your skin like those of many cacti! Thank goodness. I accidentally grabbed a hairy cactus yesterday. Invisible but painful little spines. Duct tape worked well to pull them out. The other trick, learned in the ER in Phoenix, is to apply a coat of Elmer's Glue over the area where the spines are, letting it solidify a little, then peel it off - it takes the spines with it.

Wow, I just knew you'd know the fix!

Crack the pot open with a hammer and wear heavy gloves while handling the plant. That looks pretty crowded. I'd transplant it right away. Imagine all those roots fighting for space down there.
