Overcast day, 59 f, lite breeze from the South, tide was out. When we arrived to walk our dog we noted that not a single bird was evident-either visually or audibly! I looked out and spied a lone bird- a Bald Eagle feeding on something#1. Brought out my D500 with 500pF attached and put some glass on the situation. Found the eagle out over 400 yards feeding on something with white feathers-a gull I think.
We believe that the violence of the gull takedown so traumatized the other birds that they left the area. Plus the eagles were flying around.
Sorry we missed the attack although attacks I witnessed in the past had the birds flying great distances back and forth. It is possible that the bird was chased here to die-not sure.
Another Bald Eagle landed nearby and checked thing out #2&3.
While glassing this situation about 100 ducks flushed, flying right past me #4. Managed a few shots when I spied a young eagle had flown just over my head. Could not get a good shot on the wing-too many ducks- so I settled for #5&6.
A bit later both adults flew off leaving the young eagle, first winter bird I think, to feed and fend off the crows and gulls for himself #7&8.
Once the adults flew off other birds started flocking into the area #9.
This last shot is not my best-the bird was nearly 600 yards out but it had something in its claws #10. Looks like the spinal column of a gull is sticking up through the eagle's tail feathers. The body seems to be in the bird's claws-gruesome!
The ducks flying by were at about 250 yards away, the rest of the images are from at least 425 yards out! 1/640 to 1/1250, f 7.1, ISO from 640 to 5000! EC +1.0, no CPL-Handheld! Yes, some cropping and pp did occur.
