A dragonfly is an insect belonging to the order Odonata, infraorder Anisoptera (from Greek ἄνισος anisos, "unequal" and πτερόν pteron, "wing", because the hindwing is broader than the forewing). Adult dragonflies are characterized by large, multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong, transparent wings, sometimes with coloured patches, and an elongated body. Many dragonflies have brilliant iridescent or metallic colours produced by structural colouration, making them conspicuous in flight. An adult dragonfly's compound eyes have nearly 24,000 ommatidia each.

Love it! Thanks for posting this. I too have recently taken some photos of a dragonfly! Poor little gal was flying around in my house, I typically let living things live (I put spiders outside when warm enough). This one unfortunately did not survive and I found her upside down well dead in my lower level the next day. 1st photo is the entire dragonfly, 2nd is her left eye and forehead, 3rd and 4th is my homemade focus stacking device.
