I'm from a mid-west farm where dinner was served at noon and supper at the end of the workday. During haying season, we enjoyed two lunches - one in mid-morning and another in mid-afternoon. In the morning we had toast and coffee at 4:00 AM before milking cows and a regular breakfast at 7:00 before going to school. Take care & ...

That was my experience with "dinner" and "supper" growing up in the midwest. My kids hate it when I use the word "supper" for some reason. In downeast Maine the term "lunch" is often used to describe a small meal any time of the day.

Do you call the evening meal "dinner" or "supper"? I've always called it "dinner," but it seems to vary around the country and the world.

As a child, dinner at noon, supper at 6. Now, lunch at noon, supper at 6.

To this old farm couple, it has always been breakfast, dinner, and supper. When my daughter-in-law invites us to dinner, I always have to establish the time because she is a lunch and dinner gal from the city.

The way I understand the words, "dinner" is a large meal (more food) served after breakfast. "Supper" is a meal smaller than a dinner, served in the evening.
So, you can have breakfast - dinner - supper, or breakfast - lunch - dinner, or breakfast - lunch - supper. And for some, breakfast - lunch - dinner - supper! 😳
And then there's a "luncheon", but I'll let that pass...

Don't forget brunch which is just an excuse to have mimosas at 10 in the morning with a late breakfast

Dinner at noon, supper at six. Supper as often as not was left overs from dinner. Oh yes, it was up hill on foot in a raging snow storm getting to both.

At home it’s supper. If we go out, it’s dinner.

UK - Dinner is the main meal of the day. Most often a family affair. Nowadays with everyone at work or school during the day, that daily family get-together has become a social occasion early evening. A great time to chat and enjoy food and drink with family and / or friends - usually at home, sometimes in a restaurant. Mid-day meals are now "lunch". Supper might still refer to a hot drink and a biscuit before bed, but is losing popularity.

For me it has always been breakfast, lunch and dinner. A small meal between breakfast and lunch is called brunch. If you subscribe to breakfast, dinner and supper, what do you call that small meal between breakfast and dinner? Brinner?

In Arkansas, unless you are a transplanted 'yankee', you have dinner at noon and supper after 5 p.m. That can vary depending on which part of Arkansas you're living in.

I am a transplanted yankee, but grew up in Illinois. My step-father was from Oklahoma and my mother's folks were from Carbondale, Illinois, a university town, so I am comfortable with either expression.

So the "CA and NY" region, then.

When visiting my grandmother as a child in the farm country in upstate NY she always said supper, I never knew what what she was talking about. I was brought up in the suburbs of Philly and it was dinner. Now in the Pacific NW where everyone calls it dinner.

When I lived on the farm it was called supper. When I moved to the city it changed to dinner.
