There is a proposed class action lawsuit against Canon because of its printers. At least one model of the Pixma series all-in-one will not scan or fax if there is no ink in the printer. Ink is not necessary to scan or fax, but you must still buy and install the cartridges. Another model (or two) will not print in black unless there is a color cartridge installed and ready to go. If you run out of color ink, you can't print black, either.
Yes, I know that in some cases, some colored ink is used when printing black, but that isn't necessary. On my printers, I can select "Black Only."
It's a shame the way businesses are heading. We pay the money, but we don't own the item. We can't repair it, we can't use third party batteries or ink, and in some cases, we can't sell the item. Most cell phones do not let you replace the battery or use a MicroSD card. If you want lots of memory, you have to pay the company inflated prices for it. Remember the song "Sixteen Tons"? The coal company owned everything and set the prices for everything in "the company store." It looks like we are headed in that direction.
I had that happen to me on my new TS model. I was printing all black and white. It was out of blue and stopped printing altogether. I couldn't find a "black only" offering, although there are 2 black cartridges and both were full.
I have always had great luck with Canon cameras and printers. The Canon printer that I have now justs keeps chugging alone, like a Duracell. That is not to say that the issues that you articulated do not exist, but I trust that Canon would try to correct the problems identified.

I suspect these "problems" are ways for Canon to generate income.
I have Canon and HP printers, and I try to buy generic ink. It doesn't always work. I had to return the last batch for a refund. I haven't tried the new one yet. It's hard to justify a $50 cartridge when I can get three for $15.
Yes, it seems that, in the not-too-distant future, we will own nothing but our homes (perhaps) and the clothes on our backs. Everything else will be had through subscriptions. It is already happening, from software to automobiles. As the song says, "It's all about the Benjamins".
The printer at the heart of this "lawsuit" is a less than $100 at Walmart where the guy purchased it and who would have thought that printers need ink to operate. Yes scan and fax don't use ink but it is bundled package. What these stupid lawsuits will cause is makers to make separate devices for each function and sell you three instead of one. The ink for this printer is $15 for the black and $20 for the colour cartridge.
And somehow this is worthy of a $5 million dollar lawsuit plus all the associated costs to defend and try it!
what a waste of court time

As bad as the class action suit against a lawn mower company years ago for the actual HP being a
skosh below the "advertised" HP rating.
Money grubbers?
Just bought three colors and black for my Epson for $29.00 tank printer.

I would expect a scanner to scan without needing ink. Requiring ink was a conscious decision on the part of Canon. Why? $$$

I love my Epson Tank. I've printed over 3,000 pages, and the tanks are half full. The four replacement bottles cost about $65.
Unless i missed it, what model(s) are affected?
