Update from Baguio ---

There was a quick Tropical Storm passing over northern Luzon on Monday, and we’re on the very southern edge of the large affected area. For the 24 hours from 10:00 AM Monday, we had 25 1/2 inches of rain. This led to a bit of flooding and some small landslides, though nothing very near us – it seems always to be quite stable in our subdivision. There was, however, a power outage in the whole region, lasting two days, and no Internet for most of the week. Fortunately, I some time ago had bought two good emergency light units and several rechargeable lights and flashlights, so we got by OK for light, and have power banks for the phones. No electricity, of course, for the water heater, refrigerator, oven, microwave or anything else, but we have the gas (propane) stove, which works well, so no real problems. The refrigerator is quite well insulated, so we lost nothing there, just couldn’t buy my yogurt and milk until the power went back on. We maintain a good stock of non-perishable food (though it’s not what we normally eat) just in case of a more severe outage. This time of two days is the longest in the five and a half years I’ve been here, though some of the islands do have much longer outages.

Emalyn (my wife) got her first vaccine (Pfizer) shot, and is scheduled for the second tomorrow – even though she already had the virus a year or so ago, while stuck in Dumaguete for a year. Her wisdom teeth came in while she was there, and had to be pulled – so she doesn’t have to worry about that! Most here are being given the Chinese vaccine, with no choice. I don’t intend to be vaccinated, unless forced. When I had the virus, it was so mild that at first I didn’t even realize what it was; later I put two and six together, and remarkably, got eight! I’m not going to be traveling, which does have the vaccination requirement – the reason she got it, to be able to visit relatives in the province (and do some photography).

Otherwise, the status is pretty much quo! – nothing changes very much. Our health causes no problems. My biggest one is the nerve damage from my motorcycle accident (and broken neck) in Phoenix, causing constant numbness in my arms and hands in the eight years since. I just deal with it, and a bit of arthritis in my shoulders; both just come and go in severity, randomly. There’s nothing much which can be done about it, especially at now near 94. Fortunately, I can ride my Honda with no problem.

Saturday afternoon the Internet came back, finally. Now catching up on LOTS of email (about half of which is offering me anywhere from 5 to 25 million dollars!)

I just sent $5,000 to the National Director of Finance of Nigeria for him to process the paperwork to set up an account necessary for me to receive the $25-million for helping him get his vast fortune out of the country. He said that he can not use his own money for it would be suspicious of what he was trying to do. He is a multi-billionaire so the money he will be sending me to help him is a mere pocket-change for him. I've got my eye on several great cameras and a collection of lenses and I plan on donating the remainder to a local orphanage for the deaf and blind.

Well, I see the mailman coming up the road now so I'm going to see if the check he's sending me has arrived yet..! I can't believe how lucky I am that he chose me to help him get his fortune out of the country..!!

What a coincidence! Me, too! I had to send him $10,000, but I'll be getting $50 million. I put a deposit on a mansion, and I ordered a Lamborghini.

That part of the world seems to get quite a bit of rain. Stay healthy and safe.

Yes Sippy, you are lucky. Nothing like having a rich friend in Nigeria. BTW- Can you have him call me? I have this bridge in New York he might be interested in.
