Or GAS. Yesterday I finally made the decision to dip into the mirrorless ocean and also jumped ship on my dedication to Canon. I picked a Sony A7iii because I've listened to many positive comments about this camera. I'm still hanging on to my Canon gear, because they have become second nature to my shooting habits and work very well. I already noticed how different and ergonomically unfriendly the controls are compared to the Canons. I have 15 days to get fully acclimated to the operation of this fine camera before it gets returned. Also which lens adapter do you recommend to use Canon EF lenses.

With products like the industry redefining EOS R5, why would you pick an older 24MP model from Sony now in 2021 (other than the cost)? The A7## models are rather clunky in their handling and limited in their customizing options as compared to the advanced EOS bodies. I can't speak to the adapter options as I use my even older Sony a7II exclusively for manual focus Canon FD lenses. I like Metabones equipment, including the metal donut I use to adapt the FD lenses, but they're expensive -- like in the cost of another lens expensive.

Cost was the driving force. The R5 was my first choice, but the price point keeps me out of that world. If it is as good as I believe it is, maybe I'll return the Sony and sell other items and just bite the bullet and get an R5. You actually described the controls better than I, clunky. Thanks for your response.

Have you considered the R6?

I haven't jumped to an EOS MILC simply because of the cost. I have a perfectly good mirrorless camera in the Sony a7II that I bought used and slightly damaged in a non image-effecting way. If I had it to do over again, back about 5 years ago, I would have gone with the a7III instead. But today (or a future today) I'd go with the EOS R5. The R6 is a drop in pixel resolution from my current cameras and the older EOS R / RP models are missing the IBIS feature that have become 'necessary' for my non IS-lenses.

...I have an A7 that I converted to IR. Works OK...but I'll never do Sony for anything else. Clunky.

Maybe you get used to the Sony controls. Maybe not. I never found them clunky so I never had to adjust my habits for the Sony a7iii.

I can’t compare the Sony to the Canon R5 or R6 but I do use a Nikon Z6 and find the Sony controls more rational.

As to adapters, are you a “typical UHH member” ? Whatever that may mean, it’s clear that most of them are unhappy with EF to Sony lens adapters. I’ve found the Fotodiox “Pro” to be the most compatible, but I’m not your “typical uhh member”.

AFS is kinda quick but not instantaneous with ring USM and STM motors. No other AF functions or motors work well or at all. Info communication and auto iris work well. I use the Nikon IBIS rather than the Canon IS. You can’t combine them. Thaz all the compatibility I need. YMMV.

Yes and almost compromised, but wanted to see if Sony would meet my expectations. So far not as user friendly as my Canons. I'll give it a few more days to see if I can make it work, but probably end up returning and finding a way to get the R5.

I was hoping the Sony would be better in low light than my 5Ds and 7DmkII and probably is, but if I can't use the controls competently in the dark, it will be frustrating at best.

I've heard the Sigma MC11 works well, but won't go there yet until I can get used to the strange/unfamiliar controls. Thanks for your response.

How high? The a7III is the next generation beyond my a7II. But the a7II is newer than my older 5DIII and the EOS 5DIII is a much better performer when north of ISO-2000.

Sometimes 6400 and rarely 12,800
This was shot with the 5Ds at 12,800
Maybe I'm nit-picking.

Wonderful view! But, it will be hard so recreate this test case between the Sony and any other models. I looked at some of Rockwell's example images between the Sony a7III and the EOS R5. He shoots and posts the JPEGs as well as his processed results. I think the Sony does a better clean-up of the noise, but alas, at the cost of the finest details. The fine details of his posted examples are similar to your post, so it seems we're looking at apples to apples comparisons of Canon's results, even for different cameras.
