Acadia National Park and Fort Knox in Maine October 14, 2021. Gorgeous day. Unfortunately the tide was out so I was unable to get any photos of waves crashing over the rocks.

Fort Knox is located on the Penobscot River in the town of Prospect, Maine. Built between 1844 and 1869, it was the first fort in Maine built entirely of granite. It is named after Major General Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War and Commander of Artillery during the American Revolutionary War, who at the end of his life lived not far away in Thomaston, Maine.

The photo of the huge cannon is a 15-inch Rodman cannon. 15-inch refers to the diameter of the bore. The tube alone weighed in at 55,000 pounds. It took 12 men to load. It fired either a 330 pound shell or 450 pound cannonball. The weight of the gunpowder was 60 pounds for a shell and 100 pounds for a cannonball. At 20 degree elevation it could fire a 450 pound cannoball over three miles.

Thank you Susan. Yes, old forts and all history should be preserved not destroyed.

Memories of a summer. The first NP I ever visited, with an old-fashioned clam bake run by a h.s. history teacher from Bar Harbor supplementing his income. A ranger’s 2 hour lecture showing the life that exists in the 12 feet of tidal change.
Very nice series. Thanks.
