Also, hopefully the techs have sufficient command of the English language, being that parent companies are fond of outsourcing their customer service to somewhere near the far end of the world. . . .
Just communicated with a Walmart customer service rep via online chat last night. Tracking showed an item I purchased online was delivered, but it wasn't. The rep wrote with a bit of strained grammar which indicated English wasn't her first language. But she contacted the vendor while I was online. She asked if I wanted a refund or a replacement, I picked a replacement. The vendor emailed me this morning saying it was on it's way. Really don't care about correct English as much as getting the issue resolved without any hassle, which she did.

Congratulations!
Glad to know that your issue was successfully resolved in the end. My point was not about correct grammar. It was about "many" techs inability to communicate clearly. Often their heavy accent doesn't help either. It's not their fault but the company that hires them.

I also have an EPSON 3880. From time to time, I get an error message that tells me to call the service center. Each time, I unplug the printer, both the power cable and the cable that runs to the computer, count to five, and plug it back in again. Works every time. The printer just needs to be reset.

Thanks. Good to know. The tech asked me to do that but it didn’t work. When I tried again later it was successful.

I'm surprised you even got a technician to respond for a device that is that far out of warranty.

Who knows? I guess Epson backs their products.

Not usually.
I have a two year old all in one and they don't like helping me with it.
Anyone who gets help for a product from them that is beyond the warranty is fortunate.

Interesting. I guess I should consider myself fortunate.

Three points from experience: 1. There are many ways that electronics can get stuck in some digital no man's land. A piece of data stuck some place in memory, etc. causes problems nearly impossible to know exactly what is going on. Resetting, on/off, sitting for a time often clears such. There are now processers in everything and storage memory for settings so who knows where the problem setting is. Maybe if you could repeat the problem causing sequence you could provide the tech the right info, but if it occurs infrequently who knows what anyone did.
2. Infrequent seemingly random events are a bear to fix for anyone, in any time period. My mom (96) tells the story of a record player that when she was a child wouod fail at hoje, but work at the shop, thay was at least 80 yrs ago. Someone mentioned shorts, etc., things like that can happen due to heating up, room temp use, etc.
3. At least some fault often goes to whomever designed the error messages, often three are too few and non-informative to boot. I had instruments at work costly $100,000 or more where everything that failed basically gave the same message, basically as informative as saying "not working" which I knew.

I'll end my input with this little dozzy. Many years ago we had a VCR which quit working, would not show tapes, I believe it even stopping sending the signals thru to the TV. We tried everything, nothing. Then I thought maybe it would do something in the programming mode. So I tried to program it to record and viola everything worked again.
Somewhere a piece of info stuck in the wrong place, maybe do to a power spike, etc. Never failed again to my knowledge.

...and sometimes an on and off isn't enough. My Vizio TV requires this for a reset.

How to Reset a Vizio Smart TV

Unplug the TV's power cord from its outlet.
Hold the power button on the TV for 3 to 5 seconds and release.
Reconnect the power cord and turn the TV back on.

Most computerized electronic devices either have a rechargeable battery or a capacitor that holds the settings memory when power is off. That "unplug and hold the power button" procedure interrupts the current from that backup battery or capacitor to the computer, causing the reset to defaults. Some Macs work that way.
