I have the same lens and teleconverter and I've used them on my 7D mk II many times. I currently have that lens combo on my 90D and have used it on my 5DSr and 5D mk IV and 6D and M50 and a few others and have not noticed any significant degradation to the images. My friend has used the combo on his T5i and T7i without issues also. I'd have the teleconverter checked by someone who knows what they're doing, like say, a Canon service tech.

Will do that as soon as I return home. I’ll have B&H check it for me. Thanks for your reply.

I'd take the free option first of posting unedited JPEG examples, being sure to store the files. There's also the idea of specifically testing a subject, with and without the extender installed, to assure you can consistently recreate the issue when testing specifically for the extender installed.

I have a canon 100-400L II lens that I use on my EOS R & 7Dii. I purchased a canon 1.4 converter V-III but am finding the images are very soft. (extremely disappointed). I’ve tried upping the shutter speed etc. but still soft focus on all images. The mentioned lens used as is takes perfectly sharp images. Any way to solve this issue?

Can't help you much, I use a 1.4x III with my 100-400L mk2 all the time. I also used it on my mk1 before I traded up to the mk2. I find that my images on the mk2 with the extender are at least as sharp as the mk1 was without extender.

Could be you need to do a micro adjustment on each body. Especially the EOS R since you are using an adaptor.

Micro adjusting the AutoFocus is not applicable to Canon's mirrorless technology. The feature does not exist in the EOS R models.

OK I guess that means they think with a mirrorless it is impossible for the AF to be off/malfunction. My old friend Murphy says they are wrong.

Nice leap of faith having not even seen an example image nor being aware of EOS mirrorless technology. Fits in nicely with: Success is the photographer. Failure is the equipment.

Per the Canon MTF charts (and my experience), there is only a slight degradation in sharpness (about 5%) using the MKIII 1.4EX on that lens, so my thought is maybe you’re having an AF issue that can be corrected with microfocus adjustment. In my case, there is a big change in the MFA with and without the 1.4EX on my 100-400L. At the risk of starting an unending discussion on the benefits of MFA, and without seeing your images, I’d consider an investment in the FoCal microfocus adjustment system to obtain max sharpness but let’s see the unsharp image.

Again. I’m away on vacation and won’t have the images for post till I get home. The EOS R does not have micro adjustments. I have Focal but since updating my os it no longer works with dlsr because I have to repurchase new version. They do not support due to upgrading my os. I refuse to reinvest especially since it’s useless for mirrorless camera’s.

Once back home I intend to do some research and create testing as you mentioned. No intention to spend money till I’m sure of the problem. Making sure it’s not something I’m doing causing the problem.

Didn’t realize you had an R, so we’ll have to look for another solution. As you say, controlled testing is in order.

Here are Canon’s MTF charts for your lens, with and without the EX 1.4 MKIII. As you can see, there should be a very small difference. So you’re using a lens, an extender and and EF to RF adapter. The stack up shouldn’t make any difference to the AF on a MILC camera, but I wonder. Have you tried manual focus with this combination yet?

Thanks for the charts. I haven’t tried manual focusing with this combo. I dropped my L to RF adapter and damaged the lock ring so I won’t be using the 100-499 anymore on this trip. I’ll be shooting the rest of my vacation with my RF 24-105 f4.
