Hey everyone, just use what you have; use your imagination, that's what photography is for. Quit worrying about the vagaries of markets. Enough said!

But it is fun to argue about the vagaries of the market for unreleased cameras most of us don’t need and can’t afford.

Considering all the excellent commentary here, I’ve decided to hold out for the Z8. The Z8 is predicted to be the flagship for Real Photographers. I’ll be happy to leave the Z9 to the Biffers, NFL Sideliners, and GASsy Soccer Uncles.

Oooopz ... way too late, in the sense that having adopted one of his uglee duckies I have already dropped a few sheckels into GG’s “make cameras uglier” tip jar.

Despite its pedigree and grotesqueness I bought it for one narrow reason, which it seems to serve well enough. And I’ve had some minor success in training myself not to really see it when I look at it. It’s what psychology calls “Revulsion Conditioning”. I keep a pic of my Z6 on my fridge ;-)

Haha...add another $5 to the tip jar!

You meant your F3 or F4? He didn't design your Z6 though. I think the D4 was the last designed by ItalDesign firm.

We had F3s at work. They look to me as if their appearance “just happened”. I’m sooprized to hear that they look that way by design. I thought they were just overly busy looking like a battleship, just pile all the necessary stuff onto it and WYSIWYG :-(

OK so the Z6 is just grotesque by default. Good to know that it’s not intended to be somebody’s masterpiece !

I can no longer resist commenting. I enjoy the cameras I have (Z6 & D5), but I am planning on getting a Z9. Just because I think it will be fun and bring some new features and capabilities I would like to try. I am not a pro, I am not independently wealthy. It just sounds like a fun camera! I can no more "cost-justify" it than someone buying season or playoff tickets for major sports. I see both sports seasons tickets and a new Z9 will serve the same purpose for me - bringing in some fun!

That is great! That is definitely a great reason to buy it. If a camera is fun to use you will use it more and enjoy it more.

What or who is the target market for this camera?

They spent a lot of develop resources on what looks to be a low volume seller.

Could it be that the purpose of this camera is not to generate revenue but rather to show that Nikon has the technical mojo to build it?

The target market is professional news , sports and wildlife shooters, as well as hobbyists who can afford to own and use possibly the best Nikon ever.

It is a necessary camera for Nikon to regain its brand aura and reputation which has taken a severe hit, along with Nikon's falling bottom line from the likes of Sony and Canon mirrorless.

This isn't a mass market camera, but the Nikon Z9 (if it delivers what is promised) can help sell even less expensive Nikon product and keep Nikon faithful from switching to Sony or Canon, Fuji or Panasonic for their mirrorless systems.

Folks give Nikon and the Z9 a chance. Don't bury them before you even give them a chance. I am happy to give them the chance they have earned with decades of great gear.

Cheers

When the Z models came out there was so much hype about them. I personally said, based on trends wait for the Zs which was Nikons typical improved version of first model releases.
Well we have seen several reiterations of the Z models since.
So I think the Z9 might be a fix to all of the things that fell short of the previous Z models.

When the F5 came out in 1996, I said if you can't take a good pic with this you are no good.
An F5 for film or a D200 for digital is all I could ever need. Anything else is overkill.
Long live the DSLR.

IMNSHO you’ve got it exactly right.

Not everyone can spend the price but some can. And those who can afford it should ignore all the faux sage wisdom about justifying the need or about exhausting the potential of your 5 year old SLR. Thaz all just UHH parrot squawking about gear thaz beyond their experience or understanding.

In 1996 terms I would agree. Today and anytime in the past several years, that 1996 wisdom becomes today’s outdated foolish nonsense.

Acoarst not every user should skip the Z7ii and go to the Z9. But every user would do well to move on a quarter century and leave 1996 back in 1996.

Actually I although I have an F5 I didn't need the F5. The F3HP is a better camera for me. I don't need anything more if film and processing didn't get more expensive and hard to get.
And No I don't want nor need the D200.
