Lightroom has new masking capabilities coming up. Rumored to be announced the end of October and (maybe) released shortly thereafter(?)

Sorry, was on vacation and missed it.
The link I posted was different from yours, more detailed.

Examples I've seen were on Classic but rumors say it will extend to Cloudy and also ACR.

I hope it happens. Right now, convenient back and forth to Photoshop isn't terribly onerous, but masking in LR has the potential to be easier, faster, and non-destructive (? with masking).

"Masking"? That's a delicate topic here.
Actually, masking would be a good addition to LR.

I disagree.
Masking is what Photoshop is for. LR is a light retouching and cataloging program. Photoshop is the masking and heavy retouching program.
Why complicate Lightroom? It is already bloated and overly complex. You have used it for years it seems simple, but to a beginner there is a big learning curve.

Why complicate Lightroom? Because people are intimidated by Photoshop. Photoshop is already bloated and overly complex (although people who use the more arcane tools would disagree). Adding things to Lightroom makes them available to those who might not even try to learn Photoshop.
And, just like Photoshop, you don't HAVE to learn all the tools in Lightroom.

Lightroom already has masking, has for a few years now, but it's limited.
Adobe's strategy seems to be to gradually add Photoshop features to Lightroom, then when nearly all of our post-processing work can be done in Lightroom, Adobe will remove Photoshop from the $9.99/month plan and charge those who want to use it.
I'm curious how long until Adobe adds layers to Lightroom.

People are intimated by LR too. Just using it for simple things is a learning curve for a beginner. We forget because we have been using it for a long time. It seems straightforward to us.
But maybe that's why Adobe created LR cloudy which, I suspect, may eventually replace LR classic.
Learning PS is no more difficult than learning Lightroom. It just takes some time, just like Lightroom. When you consider the time you have spent on LR that same time on PS you would know how to get done what you want to do, just as well.
I think it makes perfect sense to have a simple cataloguing light editing retouching and a more complex program for the more complicated retouching. Having two programs that do the same thing is a waste of resources.

This could be the ultimate plan. Adobe has kept their world and honored the 9.99/month for many years now and inflation is reducing profits. They will have to do something different in the future.

I’ve been using Lr 6.14 and never had a reason to upgrade to the subscription, but after viewing this video, I may have to rethink. It looks like this newest version might just be a game changer.
