Any thoughts? Quick iPhone shot.

My quests is you were trying to show the apple picker with his results in one shot. I found myself flipping back and forth with the two subjects. Perhaps if the were closer you would have been able to pull it off.

At first glance I see part of a box of apples and a lot of dark underexposed area surrounding a bright area in the upper right. What is in the light area? Ok, per Frank, it's an apple picker.

Linda what is the story you are trying to tell? How do you feel about it?

I loved the light on this bin of apples. Then I saw a picker in the shadows and loved the silouutte. Tried to get both. Maybe another time🤨

I like the light on the apples as well, in the first one.

And for that reason I like the 2nd one a lot better!!

And one thought, a photo with two subjects is confusing to the viewer. It’s better to have one main subject. So you could have the apples as leading to the subject however in the first pic I think he was too far away to be the subject. But it’s good you are thinking about it!

Much better selection of the main subject.

I actually really like the subtlety of the original. The left side of the apple box leads nicely to the silhouette of the picker. I like the contrast between the straight lines of the box, the rounded forms of the apples, and the dappling of the leaves. I like the luminance contrast between the box and the shadows. I like the color contrast between the saturated box and applies and the desaturated hues in the shadows.

And honestly, I think the story of the first image is much more compelling. To me, the second picture is a lovely shot of a bunch of apples, but doesn’t have the more interesting environment that tells the journey of the apples and the love of the picker.

In a perfect world I’d like to see the picker a little larger in the frame to make it a bit more obvious, for example by standing back a little farther with a tighter lens. But I know you were shooting with an iPhone, presumably as the camera you had with you. That’s also something that could be done in post processing if you are so inclined. But either way, I find your first post in the thread compelling.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. Must have time on your hands to find an oldie. 😁
You said very well what I was seeing and thinking at the time. I may go back and play with it a bit. Feel free to if you’re inclined. I do love watching the orchard activities around here. Thanks again!

Haha! I just noticed that you are another Yakima Linda from one of your comments on another post, so I looked at your profile to see the topics you’ve created.

I’d love to see a sampling of your more recent work!

I need to pursue photography again! The iPhone is just so quick and easy plus I have so many other interests too. I will keep your request in my head though!
Thank you.

I think it's close. Having the apple bin and the picker in the same shot would be a good thing. I would approach it with a longer focal length (so the picker would be a bit larger) and a lower angle (so you could place the picker closer to the bin). Stepping back a bit would make the picker a bit larger relative to the bin. You can use your fingers to reduce the field of view of your phone camera.

I really appreciate your comments and advice. Much closer to what I was thinking. Thank you so much!
