There's only one parking lot by the Dam. The sun rises to right side of where we (photographers and fishermen) are which faces the Dam. Birds typically fly/fish from the direction of the Dam towards the sun. I can't imagine where you were. Stop by the visitors center which is on the other side of route 1 and get directions to the parking lot at the Dam.
