Sunday at 0615 found me feeding my horse and then wandering around looking for possible photo subjects. A large spider had a web at a paddock gate. I finished my feeding chore and went to get the camera. When I got back the lady was missing. I looked around but could not find her. The same thing happened yesterday.
Today I realized that she had built a shelter (needed with the rain we had yesterday and last night) out of a leaf and fir needles. I think that rather than sit in the middle of her web she decided to take a lesson from wildlife photographers and built this hide where she can keep an eye on her web and stay dry.
Most years by this time we have a number of large spiders enjoying the bounties of big fat termites. This year there have been a lot less (is that an oxymoron) termites and almost none of the spiders are very big.
