Broken Beak's Progress :

I promised a few shots to update you on how the California Scrub Jay with a broken off stub for a beak is doing from time to time. I think he is acting like it never happened at all! The only handicap I can see is when he tries to attack the suet that is in a wire hanger. His beak does not fit well in the little square holes like it used to but now he tries to get the corners of a block, or the edges, not so much the center of a new block of suet. Lots of times he just pounds on the suet & knocks a bigger chunk that falls to the ground. Then he immediately follows it down & comes back for more! Loose seeds are easy and so is drinking water....but a 'beak full" just doesn't mean the same anymore! Chuckle, it takes longer and what should he do withe long tongue hanging out in the breeze ...doesn't seem to bother him however. So here is Broken Beak's update: What do YOU think?

Amazing! Could the Jay still manage without you feeding him?

Oh yes! I am positive he is not dependent on me....I see him out foraging all over my area. We were gone for over a week so the feeders ran out & he was still his perky old self when we got back. He has a companion too, they are always together, could be a mate? I can't tell the males from the females so he could be a she even! LOL...he seems very bold & aggressive for his territory so I assume he is the male. Thanks for asking! Good question, Walt

Yes, I totally agree! He never seemed to be in pain even the first day but he was awkward & fumbling with things but never flinched or stopped trying. Thats Rusty for looking in! Walt

I know what you mean! No pity necessary for him! But I still wish a prosthetic beak could be made for him....I saw that a Bald Eagle had one done once. Very successful looked like. Thanks for your comment sscnxy! Walt
