Thank you all for responding. I spoke to Nikon for a possible inspection but then realized that I had bought the camera (refurbished by Nikon) from Adorama with a 3 year warranty. Called them got a repair reference number and a referral to Adam's electronics in Huntington beach: per Adorama the closest contract facility for this contract: abut an hours drive. They had the referral number, inspected camera and lens: the camera was fine (yes they also cleaned camera contacts and inspected everything), the lens was the problem, but is not worth repairing (it still can be used as manual focus, but the aperture does not communicate to the camera.
The traffic on the way back was so bad, that it was faster to divert to Samy's Camera on Fairfax. With the knowledge in hand that the camera is in good shape , I decided to look again and obtained the Tamron 18-400 for our trip to Boston and New Hampshire next week , And to replace the 1.8 Nikon lens, I couldn't resist a Open Box Sigma 30mm 1.4 Dc lens for about ½ what goes for on other sites.
