The flower is very nice, but what I like most is the premise of your post. Setting a personal goal and trying to better it is a great approach to take with photography. Compete with yourself instead of everyone else.
Breaking it down to YOUR best of the month gives you the chance to share something very nice without it being your best ever. Great style and approach IMO.

I took it both ways. In the end, I liked the large open space around the flower and the mottling framing it in the distance.

The image is lovely, and I am glad to know that for whatever reason the empty space is intentional. Otherwise I would have suggested some cropping.
