Atalaya was the winter home of Archer Huntington, a millionaire philanthropist, and Anna Hyatt Huntington, his world-renowned sculptor wife.
They came to the northern South Carolina coast in 1930 to search for the location for the home. They purchased land that had been four rice plantations. The land is now Huntington Beach State Park and Brookgreen Gardens.
This is a remarkable area and well worth spending at least two days time visiting.
OMG, thanks for posting that. I wondered what had become of Archer M. Huntington! He appears to be the son of Arrabella and Collis P. Huntington and both nephew and step-son of Henry E. Huntington. Collis would not acknowledge Archer and so he is obscure where I live. Collis and Henry being of the Southern Pacific Railroad Huntingtons. I worked at the H. E. Huntington Library in San Marino, CA at one time from 1980-92. Henry married his aunt after his uncle died. And it seems Collis disowned members of his family such as Archer. I am not even sure Archer was actually Collis' son as there may have been some hanky panky going on and an attempt not to spread the family fortunes far. Or was Archer adopted by Arabella prior to her marriage to Collis or was there something else going on? The subject was also hush hush at the H.E. Huntington Library. Personally I am glad to learn that he was quite successful and important on his own. Again thanks for posting. If you have more images of the estate please post them.
