I actually have a method I use when I describe the three (main) Parties in Canada to Americans;

The Liberal Party of Canada
The Conservative Party of Canada
The New Democratic Party of Canada

1) The NDP wants to build Government-funded trams that go over every intersection in Canada so that no one needs to take personal responsibility for themselves and there is no way they could ever be hit by a car crossing the street. All the money saved in Healthcare from avoiding such accidents will be spent on existential courses in the philosophy of surfing.

2) The Conservative Party of Canada expects you to look both ways before you cross the street and take responsibility for yourself. If you ARE hit by a car, ok, we'll make sure that you get healthcare, but we think that if you can pay for additional healthcare, well then you SHOULD pay to help take the burden off the Taxpayer and oh! If you are never able to work again, we're going to make you show up to an office every year to prove that you don't have your legs.

3) The Liberal Party of Canada expects you to look both ways before you cross the street and take responsibility for yourself. If you ARE hit by a car, you will get the same service as everyone else, regardless of wealth. If your accident is bad enough that you can no longer work, we will pay to have you retrained and get you back to paying your taxes for the next guy that gets hit by a car. If you can't work at all, the State will take care of you until death, but don't expect to be driving a Porsche!
