My guess would be, whatever the professional tech happens to be using at the time.

"the professional tech" at the store may or may not have done sensor cleanings before. It isn't hard.
And yes, they are sold it two sizes that I've seen; FX and DX. For the D500, I clean mine as needed with the DX sized swab.

I would presume that if he's "never done it before", he's not a professional tech? I may be wrong of course.

Yes, the tech supposedly knows what they are doing and if they screw up the store/tech have to make it right.
