I didn't post this in the Smart Phone forum because I wanted to reach the people that are likely not to know about phone camera capabilities. I may end up there any way.

The 2 images were taken with a phone released in 2019 and is currently 3 generations behind the top models.

The distance to subject is about 25 feet. The first image is the normal view, the second is 10X zoom. Both are SOOC.

My point is the phones are steadily climbing the camera ladder and most probably will reach the point soon where they will be on par or better than all but the professional models with astronomical price tags.

I paid less than $500 for my phone.

I own two of Sony's best cameras (not A1) and have no intention of selling but my next camera up grade will definitely be a phone camera.

No doubt phone imaging will continue to improve. Controllability is my current concern. I just pre-ordered the iPhone 13 Pro Max. My 12 takes great images but I want more control. Strange settings for the image. 1/10000, f 1.6, ISO 32, ;ens 2.2mm. The second shot is lizard's tail on our front walk. 1/10000, f 1.6, ISO 32, lens 5.1 mm.

Just out of curiosity, what megapixel size is your phone's sensor?

I doubt they will reach pro level, unless a larger sensor and view finder can be added. But they have been and continue getting better. It seems that camera quality has become a major (the major?) selling point of phones. They are especially good for Street Photography and there is no reason to think they will not eventually replace cameras for the general public.

Completely agree. I don't see the general public using digital cameras - phones everywhere. On a cruise, about two years back, I saw two other Digital cameras among the passengers - dozens and dozens of phone cameras. On a Panama Canal cruise I saw more cameras, maybe 10, but far more passengers just using their phones. Panama Canal ! - Wouldn't you use your camera (If you owned one) instead of a phone.

I doubt that any phone camera will match the capability of a DSLR or a mirrorless camera. I think the contributor who said this fooling himself think of all the permutations you can use with a camera to take a photograph, phone cameras do not even come near.

You should do some research. I can adjust every parammer manually and do things not possible with a big camera.
It's short coming for the time being is image quality because of sensor size.
Computational software (AI) will improve exponentially in newer iterations and errode any advantage real or perceived.
It's not science fiction...it happening.

Yes, they are really great for taking snapshots. I like the 2nd one zoomed in a bit. You can see all the noise and fuzzing well. Sorry for the hit, but my view is that if you can't make a 24 X 36 of it and hang it on a wall, it isn't photography - it's a pastime.
