Take the bottom of a Isopropyl alcohol bottle, find one the shape of a Stoffen diffuser. I use one on my Nikon SB 600.

If you're indoors and don't need to shoot super small apertures I suggest bouncing light off walls or ceilings.

What I find to be so great about finding a DIY method of diffusing a speed flash for macro work is the pursuit of always looking for a way to do it better at as near-zero cost as possible.

I have learned through years of experimentation that the white styrofoam bowls make a great diffusion for the field and it is disposable. I also use it in my studio staged sessions at times along with bushel baskets of other DIY diffusion.

The attached image shows how I use it in the studio. In the field, I cut the hole at the bottom edge of the base of the bowl. This lets it sit up higher for my SB800 Speedlight flash to hit with its light.

What I find nice about it is that the bowl acts in a way that it wraps soft diffused light around the subject, much like a ring light plus. If it gets damaged, just use the old one to pattern the size of the hole to fit over the end of the lens, and off you go.

I've since moved on to a dual flash head arrangement and a diffusion method for use in the field.

Most flash units come with a plastic diffuser that fits on the flash head, if you have one with the flash units you have, tilt the flash head to about 45 degrees, set the flash for TTL and shoot away.

If you don't have one of the plastic diffusers, take a 3X5 inch white card, tilt the flash head straight up and attach the index card with a rubber band , set the flash for TTL and fire way. You might also try setting the flash head tilted forward a bit and see which setting works best for you.

If you want to imitate one of the flash modifiers shown in some post, take a card board envelop like a FED X or postal express envelop, cut it to look like the commercially made unit and use a strong rubber band to attach it to the flash head should be set straight up. If you want to make the light modifier more permanent, you can tape velcro strip instead of a rubber band. It might be worthwhile to buy one of these light modifiers if you find you want to use one frequently.

Sto-fen makes a good one for about twenty bucks. I bought a Chinese copy for my 680 ex from someone on eBay for around $10. It didn't fit but was easily enough remedied with some double sided tape to make it yight enough not to fall off.
