I set the coffee maker every night to turn on at 6:00 AM. I came down this morning and poured coffee into my thermal mug - with a top. I drank the coffee while I used the computer. My son came down a little later, and he said something about weak coffee. When I finished my coffee, I removed the filter from the coffee pot. No coffee grounds! Totally clean.
I removed the top from my mug and dumped out a small amount of - water! It was the same with the coffee pot - water! As far as I was concerned, I was drinking coffee. It couldn't have been totally the power of suggestion. There had to be some coffee taste in the coffee machine, the coffee pot, and my mug. I was pouring the coffee from a black pot into a black mug in a darkish room. My son uses an open cup, so he would have seen it was not dark.
That reminds me of another one. In New Hampshire one summer, I was out with John, a nearby camper. My wife was sitting in the screen room of our trailer with John's wife, Ginette. They were drinking wine coolers. When John and I returned a few hours later, the two women were acting silly, blaming it on all the wine they had been drinking. I looked at one of the empty bottles - "non-alcoholic wine cooler."
I've done the same thing with my coffee maker several times.
The power of suggestion, a very powerful thing. You don't want to mess with it
look at the money you can save, making coffee without using coffee!
Back in the 60’s I ordered a butterscotch milk shake. My brain told me something wasn’t right
And realized they made me a chocolate
Shake but it took awhile to figure it out
We made some punch using pure grain alcohol then made another. As we began to leave someone asked what to do with the other bottle that was supposed to be in the second batch, which had the same effect of being in there.

Don't think I haven't thought of that. Once a week should be okay.
I am not a coffee drinker, one cup a year is plenty for me. However, my wife is a coffee lover, as was my mother and as is my middle son. Anyway, my wife and I work for the board of elections. Our polling place is in a church where we have been permitted to use their coffee and the coffee brewer. One day one of the ladies put the grounds into the brewer, poured in the water and let the coffee machine do its thing. When it was finished she poured a cup and was disappointed with the strong flavor. A check on the carafe showed it contained the grounds along with the coffee. She forgot the filter.
