Beautiful birds. Great shot. I did not know they would dig for ants. I thought their sole purpose is to peck incessantly on my gutters!

Thanks very much Mike. It's easier to get sharp images when they're somewhat stationary. vz

Thanks Susan. They do peck away at my metal chimney covers as well, very loud. I have to shoo they away. vz

I shoo them away from my eaves, but love to see them and try to take pictures. They should be coming back any time now.

A few years ago we had a very tall house - nearly 40' at the highest corner _ with steep roof. A flicker chose that downspout right at the junction of the gutter, to destroy. Because of the height, we had to hire a pro to repair it using scaffolding. Nearly $500 later . . . But I still think they are beautiful and entertaining birds.

Some birds can be troublesome. My neighbor had a downy woodpecker that pecked to death the wooden shingles on just one side of her house. Much thanks NMGal for dropping by and commenting. vz

Thanks Susan for the interesting story. Did you send the flicker the bill? vz
