Wow! They still do that? I remember watching movies about that when I was a kid - movie theater movies. They went down with the hard hat and bulky suit, and then a giant clam would attack them.
I vaguely remember Gilbert Roland in one of those movies.
Wow! What a memory! I was nine year old when this movie played.
Yes, they still do. Tarpon Springs is a small Greek Community in Pinellas County, about 1/2 hour by car North of Tampa with about 24,000 residents and sponge picking is their main activity besides tourism. It has several Greek Restaurants, gorgeous beaches and parks to visit.
Truly amazing! Would have thought that industry long gone in the U.S. There still is a market for natural sponge, but I'd have guessed it would come from Third World countries. The restaurant looks great. Good shots!

Iwould be surprised: they selll their catch for about $8.00 at the shops around town. Of course the "bulk byers" have a great price drop because they resell. You can find the sponges to buy at regular stores. This little town is very friendly ad the people are quite helpful. Sionce I can get there in about 45 minutes from my home on the South Tampa, I go there frequently. A good thing to buy there is Olive Oil and Olives that comes directly from Greece and they are fantastic!

I use imported Greek Olive Oil when I can get my hands on it. Makes a difference in a variety of dishes.
I only cook with olive Oil. I used to import it from a friend's uncle in Greece who has an olive oil plantation in Santorine, Greece in 10Gal containers for US$25.00. I once visited the farm during harvest (November) and stayed there for one week "helping" shake the olives down from the trees with a long bamboo; (some of the trees were more than a Century old). Worked my "b" off. He pressed the olives with a stone wheel "grinder" pulled by a mule and sent it to the local coop that canned the product in 10 gallon cans that then he sold mostly locally and in Europe. I was very fortunate to be able to get 10 gallon every year until my very good friend James passed away with cancer few years ago.

Wonderful experience to have had. The number of friends diminish as years pass, selfishly, I'd rather suffer those losses than precede them.
I know what you mean. I'm 78 and still in good health, thank God. Can't trek as much but to carry my D750 and D300 in a camera bag (back pack) with about 3 - 4 lenses so far not not a problem, if the trekking is les than 3-5 miles.
