Have any of you folks used the "back button" focusing feature on your DSLR?
I'm interested in trying this, but having trouble figuring out how to program it into my custom menu. I'm shooting with my 7D. Thanks for your help...and whether you enjoy shooting this way or the original way.
Check your camera manual for custom settings.
Use the search function here and you'll see several posts about back button focusing.
I use it on my D800's, its a handy feature at times.
If you mean setting the rear button closest to the viewfinder, on my 50D you have to set it using a custom function.
I find that it comes in handy if I want to re-focus without re-metering, so that I can partial meter from one part of the scene & focus on another.
I take mostly wildlife shots and, though I don't use this facility often, there are occasions when it comes in handy.

I appreciate the information you share , Thanks . May I add another question ? When shooting a moving subject do you have to hold the back button down to follow , to have the continuous focus work ? Thanks again

What are you shooting with? The Nikons I have had, and do have have a setting for continous 51 point focusing system specifically for movinng objects. The "back button" does the sane thing as a "half snap" but only for focus, doesn't change metering. Said differently, the snap-button changes both meter and focus, the back button changes only focus

I tried it with my D7000 but I sight through my left eye, so my face got in the way of being able to operate the release button effectively, since its on the right side of the eyepiece, so I don't use it!!
Hi Linda
As silly as this may sound go to youtube and search what you want with your camera and there will most likely be someone posted how to do it. I love my Canons but sometimes I think the people who write these manuals are sadists. On you tube, individuals and Canon have made videos that explain and show how to do different features of the cameras

I sight through my left eye also, makes a few features a challenge
I have a Nikon D3 and have not used shutter button for focus for two years. Back button focus changed the way I shoot for the better.
I have used BBF exclusively going back to the 90s with a Canon EOS 1n film body.
I have since set my Canon 1D, 30D, 50D, and two 7Ds for BBF.
It's the only way to go in my view.
I use the * button for this purpose.
I am also a left eye photographer and have never had any problem.

Google "backfocus button".
I started using it a few weeks ago. Really like it but does take getting use to. It's far better than leaving the focus on the shutter button.
