I was asked to do some work for a charity for free and was wondering about taking a donation receipt for payment. I didn't know if the IRS allows that or not.
Sure, you aare making a donation.........
well, if I donate my services, would that count
absolutely...
i do a lot of photography for charitable organizations. i just do it because i want to and i don't write out a receipt/invoice for tax purposes. kinda is ironic to me.

Yes, it does count as a deduction. Even your mileage there and back can be deducted. Just be sure to get a receipt showing the hours you put in. Just be sure it is an accedited charity - with a number on their receipt - if you plan to take a deduction.
Thanks for posting that link.
The cost of materials used to print images for the charity can also be ducted. Get the reciept with the charity's tax ID # on it.
What is your motive? Charity or tax write off?

Your motive should be charity, but the tax laws allow you to deduct actual expenses and mileage (but I think only $0.14/mi) so you should do that.
You cannot deduct the value of the session - only direct expense. So if the session and images would be worth $1000.00, you CANNOT deduct that. But if you printed the images you can deduct the actual printing cost. If you deliver images on a CD, you can deduct the $0.25 for the CD.
Suggesting that taking the allowable deduction somehow diminishes the charitable nature of your work is...let's see....how to characterize this.....well it is just plain dumb. Why give money to the government that you do not have to?
It does have to be a 501 c(3) charity and be registered with the IRS as such.
I should add that the IRS deductions do not even come CLOSE to making charity work a paying proposition. You will be way into your own pocket.

I used to look down on those big stars doing those big concerts for charity just so they could clame it on their tax form. Than I rethought it and deceided it was better that it went to a charity then to those theaves in DC.
well, thanks for the opinions, some always offer cash and i just do it but I thought I could help myself out in April!
