Today Nikon announced the new 40mm f/2 lens for Nikon Z mirrorless cameras is available for pre-order...no shipment date yet given.
The lens is 1.8 inches deep and remains that length as it is an internal focus lens.
The focus ring doubles as a control ring and can be assigned to control other functions such as aperture selection, exposure compensation and iso selection.
It has some weather sealing offering dust and "drip" protection.
It has a 9 bladed electronically controlled diaphragm which according to Nikon produces beautiful bokeh.
It also has a new stepper motor which they say provides silent auto-focus.
The lens is useable on both FX and DX format cameras with the equivalent field of view of a 60mm lens on DX cameras such as the Z50 and Zfc.
The price will be $299.95.
Next up will reportedly be a 400mm f/2.8 lens for the Nikon Z cameras...save your pennies as that one should probably be a bit pricey...and heavy.

So would the 400 translate to 600 f4 for the crop sensor camera? If so, that would be pretty impressive -- could do a lot of sports shooting with a 600 f4.

Sure, if you have the disposable income...I don't. The F-mount 400mm f/2.8 lens goes for $11,200.

Maybe I can sell my first born or opt for not getting a new car in a couple of years!
That sounds good. I like the f/2 and the price.
It's frustrating that Nikon's longest lens for Z cameras is currently 200mm. That leaves bird and sports photographers with very little with which to work. They are coming out with various short lenses that might be exciting for specific needs but nothing with long reach. I hope they come out with the 400 f/2 soon. The price seems reasonable for a lens with those specs so the only problem is to root around under the mattress to see there's enough cash there. May have to hit the sock drawer, too.

I think the last time a noticed the 400 f2.8 weighed in at somewhere north of 8# was listed at $11,199.00. Of course if I bought lenses on a price per pound basis like porterhouse prime steaks, It might look like a relative bargain. :)
I have zero interest in this lens. Quite happy with my Z 50mm F1.8. However, I just read yesterday that Canon released 16mm f2 pancake that weighs 160g and the price is $399. I would buy a Z equivalent of this lens in a heartbeat even at the double the price. Does anyone know of Canon R to Nikon Z adapter?

Update on a availability...Nikon says "this fall", but Amazon says September 30th.

40mm F/2.0 ....... yawn.
Kind of my sentiments as well. Not a focal length I would be interested in buying even if I were interested in a mirrorless camera...and I'm not.

If as someone mentioned the 400 f2 weighs in at 8#, you might do just as well with the adapter and one of Nikon's legacy lenses in the 300 to 500 range. Most people seem interested in mirorrless because of it's lighter weight. If you are giving that feature away, you have some great choices from Nikon's long list of lenses.
My most regularly used gear is Sony and m4/3 but, long story short, I added a Z6 with two different mount converters, for Leica-M and Nikon-F, and no interest at all in “switching up” to Z-mount lenses.
IOW these adapters are not for a limited transition period. They are “a way of life”. But !!! OTOH 40mm is my absolute fave “normal”. The price of this new 40 is too tempting. I’ve paid more for non native 40s in various mounts (still watching out for a Steinheil Cassaron 40 in M42).
