Battery Question

I was recharging the battery, (promaster replaces Nikon EN-EL-144(N0)) for my Nikon D5600 in a Nikon charger (MH-24). Usually the light on the charger blinks slowly while charging and remains steady when done. This time after starting to blink slowly the light started blinking VERY quickly, so I stopped charging. Did anybody ever see this before? I can't recall if I bought the charger new or off someone on UHH.
Thanks
John

I don't know if it applies to Nikon but my Olympus chargers start at a slow rate of blinking then blink faster when the battery nears full charge.

Chargers are different. Do you have the manual? Can you get it on-line?

My chargers are solid red for charging;
solid green for completed;
blinking red means it no longer likes the battery (replace it).

Fast blinking on the MH-24 (Nikon calls it flickering) can indicate:
* Battery not correctly inserted
* Operating Temp Range (32-104F) Exceeded
* Battery Malfunction

I tried the Nikon battery that I had as a primary and the charger worked as it should. Definitely the promaster battery. Time for a new one.
Thanks guys
John

Right. They all have different blinking codes. If you get strange blinking, it probably suggests a problem.

This is my expereince:

The indicator lights on chargers are part f the chargerig monitor circuit. The function of that circuit is to measure the charging rate during the charging cycle and thereby reducing the charging rate as the battery charges up to full capacity. Some chargers will automatically switch to "trickle" charge once the battery is fully charged.

If the light is flashing pr blinking in an unfamiliar manner, there could be a malfunction in the battery or the charger- most likely the battery. Toward the end of its useful life, some batteries can no longer charge normally and can possibly damage the charger or simply not attain an adequate charge.

An easy test is to insert a new battery in the charger and see if it reacts normally. If it does not, the issue is in the charger.

Probably a bad battery. Suggest you stick with OEM.

Generally, but not always, battery chargers blink faster when the charging cycle is almost complete.

The only time I experienced this was with a RavPower battery and the original Nikon charger. The result was that the battery is dead forever.
Strangely that battery was performing excellent when charged with another charger. I still regret using the original one. Maybe a coincidence, maybe Nikon charger doesn't like third-party batteries.

My lesson learned, with no further experimental or factual data, is that I will use Nikon charger only for the original battery. I will continue using the third-party for either third-party or Nikon's batteries as I had been doing.

Your battery is defective. Properly dispose of it and purchase a new battery.

There are many posts and questions about batteries and rightly so because our cameras are totally dependent on energy storage, besides all the other important accessories, radio slave triggers, remote controls, exposure meters and of course, flash equipment.

As A professional photographer with a studio full of electronics, I often feel I should go into partnership with my battery suppliers. Nonetheless, when I compare the costs of batteries to the investment I have in the equipment and consider the aggravation and inconvenience that can occur from an unexpected battery malfunction or failure I decided to stick with OEM batteries for all my cameras. I keep a record of usage and recharging cycles, look after the cleanliness of the contacts on the batteries and in the battery compartments. I buy from a local dealer and if there are any issues with premature failure, my dealer will replace them. And, of course, I have many spares on hand at every shoot.

Yes, I realize there are plenty of decent third-party brands but I have experienced a few problems with them over the years. Some of them work well but don't seem to have the ampere/hour capacity so I just don't want to mess around with them.

I also stock a few spare chargers. Unlike my big gel-cell, and NiCad batteries that I use in my portable flash gear, I can not charge camera batteries with conventional chargers with external cables and alligator clips, so I can not measure charging rates with a milliampere meter- I have to depend on the little blinking lights on the chargers. If there are any irregularities or overheating, I can replace the charger. If the battery is at fault, the replacement charger will react in a similar fashion. So far- so good- I have not had a battery issue for years.

Makes no sense- folks spend a fortune on gear and then buy cheap batteries and filters that diminish its performance and even use no-name Speedlights with fluctuating trigger voltages.

I used to work in a camera store for the last five years. We sold a lot of Promaster batteries and chargers. It's one of two things.

Either it's your battery (which depending on when it was purchased Promaster may replace it). Or two which also may be likely, you need to replace the battery charger.

Nikon's battery chargers are not very good. They simply poop out during long usage. A much better battery charger is the Promaster Traveler + Battery Charger (ILC) Interchangeable Lens Camera Batteries. When the battery is plugged in, the charger will kind of drain and re Jumpstart the batteries core. The red light comes on for changing and then turns green when the battery is fully charged.

The only thing about Nikon batteries, is that they started to use a smart chip that maybe interacts with the camera. Most Promaster product batteries will work with the Nikon cameras, but Nikon was trying really hard to keep their profits with these batteries even though they don't really make the batteries themselves. But they are labeled as Nikon batteries. So there you have it.

Always have a spare battery on hand or if possible, if your camera accepts it, buy an attachable power bracket that takes regular AA batteries or AA rechargeable batteries and bypass these problems all together. Good luck!
