The R3 is also world's first fully professional mirrorless camera, meaning the first with both an integrated, non-removable full-function monoblock vertical grip and a voice recorder. This is a news and sports camera, and we always need to add voice notes as we shoot as to who's in the image or what's going on so our editors can figure it out and caption accordingly.

Once you get your R3 and start shooting it, its ergonomic élan means you'll never settle for Nikon or, God forbid, Sony, again.

I knew we could expect something wonderful from KR... (show quote)

It really is too bad there is so much hate for Nikon - the cameras are really good now and the ergo's awesome - not sure why KR thinks the ergos of the R3 will make one never use Nikon - the Z9 promises similar ergos - also ergonomics is largely a matter of opinion when it comes to dial placement (less so for grip).

Personally, I do not like how Canon puts the shutter on the index finger and ISO on the thumb wheel and then aperture on the rear dial - this is counterintuitive to me - Nikon's shutter on the thumb dial and aperture on the front dial falls in line with the real positioning of these things - aperture and then shutter as the light enters the lens and then the camera. I also prefer ISO as a button and turn as on Nikon instead of a dedicated wheel that can get bumped as on the Canon.

But this is just me - I am sure that there are those that think Canon's dials are great and would not want anything else, and that is awesome - more choices = good for everyone.

That said - its the photographer and not the camera that matters most - a great photographer with a point and shoot will likely take more compelling images than a hack with the R3 (or Z9).

Ken Rockwell: The R3 sees into your mind. It looks at your eyeball, sees where you're looking, and moves the AF point there. Since our eyes move automatically without conscious thought, this is how the R3 reads our minds and just focuses wherever we're paying attention.

How can Sony or Nikon ever beat a camera that reads your mind?

I started my film camera journey in the mid to late 70's with a AE-1, and a F2, wonderful camera's. Seemed to me that all the pro's in that era where shooting Nikons.

Paul Simon knew this, when he sang "Kodachrome".

I still use my F2's... often.

We are all different. Had a Canon Pellix back when they were hot. Could easily gone with Canon if I hadn't gotten a great deal on a comprehensive Nikon kit. No camera is life changing. The constant propaganda drumbeat is tiresome.

I still have a Canon Pellix, although I haven't used it in 30 years.

That being said I'm confused as to why any Wrist-Watch-O'saurs would wear a wrist watch???
That is if you have a cell phone with an accurate time display.
Or you could use your cell to call the: U.S. Naval Observatory Master Clock, or go online to: https://www.usno.navy.mil/USNO/time

USNO provides both voice announcements of the time, and services to synchronize systems over telephone modems.

The voice announcements have the same pattern at both sites, and always begin with the local time (daylight or standard). The local time announcements are made on the minute, and 15, 30, and 45 seconds after the minute. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is announced five seconds after the local time.

Time may be delayed on long-distance calls.

If you have an automatic chronograph winding watch, you never need to charge it like a phone and it is on your wrist and difficult to misplace. You can also locate your position at sea. Ask any sailor. I am on the water often, so my watch is an essential piece of equipment. I am sure a phone works well for most others.

If a watch tells time accurately and isn't ugly, it is a great watch.

If a camera captures great photos and isn't too hard to use and accommodates good lenses, it is a great camera.

Think about the millions of fantastic photos that have been captured by great photographers before any electronics were involved. Just look at Life Magazine or old National Geographic magazines. I remember when NG captioned the photos with camera and film information.

Works for me!

Mirrorless cameras are a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. Images captured from behind a mirror are cold, heartless and uncaring.

>To me, getting a camera is like getting a car. Personal choice!

S'why when I was younger I drove a sports car, my personal statement. Now 90, I don't even have a car. Still have a camera or three though. All Canons! <g>

Harry

PS Too bad that I don't have pics, I had a 911 but first a 356b, drove 'em all over OH, S MI and W PA. God, I loved that 356, drove it for years, finally wrecked it. I missed a turn on a side road coming home from a party at 3 AM and hit a telephone pole. OUCH! End of story - and Porsche! Bought an Audi coupe, all downhill from there as I got older.

PS My practical wife drives a Subaru. It's great for MI winters. I do love that tranny, drive wheels start to spin - BINGO, drops into 4wd! Hard to beat, 2wd mileage, aut0 4wd when needed!

[quote=Longshadow]AMEN!
I just picked one and went with it.
I liked it and stayed. I have nothing against any other major brand.
As a matter of fact, my 15 year old bridge camera is a Sony!

I’ve been a Nikon guy since 1967 though I update every 3-5 years. I went through three Nikons documenting the Vietnam conflict. The only one that survived two tours was the original Nikonos.

The Sony a1 mkIII will control your mind.
