I was certain I'd seen a discussion on this, but see nothing when I do a search. I seem to recall that when the camera is aimed at a colorful sky there is an icon on display that indicates the camera is being adjusted accordingly. I even called Canon's tech support today, but the guy came up blank. Nothing in the manual either. Very frustrating, because in my Canon point and shoot, which cost one third that of the SX40, there was such a setting which worked just fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
For sunsets on my SX40 I usually switch to Program mode and then just dial compensation down 2 or 3 clicks (-2/3 to -1 stop).
Here is an example where it was set 2 clicks under.
Thanks. That's what I used to do on my old FujiFilm and it usually produced good results. But I was certain I'd read somewhere that if one aimed their SX40 at a colorful sky (I don't recall what setting - maybe P), that the camera would automatically adjust for the correct settings to get the desired color. Maybe I was dreaming!!

It will, but that is not as effective as changing to P mode, adjust for some underexposure and then meter from the bright sky.
Thanks again - now all I have to do is await a nice sunrise or sunset - haven't had a decent on in several days, either the sky has been super clear with the only color near the horzizon and here in an urban setting not high enough to catch. or overcast.
