Roadtrip 24 Continued: Deadhorse State Park Overlook and Grandview Point Overlook Canyonlands
Today, I will cover sunset at Deadhorse St Park Overlook and Sunrise at Grandview Point Overlook in Canyonlands. First up, Deadhorse St Park Overlook. From our hotel in Moab it was about a 41 min drive to the overlook in DHSP. We arrived a little before sunset and it was already starting to get crowded. We looked around for awhile and then staked out our spot with our tripods and then waited for the sun to set. A bit hazy but still a nice sunset. It has been a long hot day so we packed it in and headed for the hotel because we had a very early wake up call the next morning for sunrise at Grandview Point in Canyonlands. From our hotel, it was approx a 1 hour drive to Grand View Point. We left the hotel around 4:30. Some people might ask why we didn't shoot the iconic sunrise at Mesa Arch. Well for one, it's been photographed to death and we knew it would be packed with photographer's and tripods, all trying to get the shot you've seen a million times. Instead, we decided to do breakfast at Grand View Point. On our way, we passed the parking lot at Mesa Arch, as we thought, it was packed with cars. We arrived at GVP and walked a very short distance to set up our chairs and table. We had the place to ourselves and as we sat there drinking coffee and eating pastries, the sunrise slowly starting lighting up the canyon. It was a very peacful and the light was just magical as it slowly painted the canyon below with golden light. A very memorable experience for us!
Tomorrow post will be our 3 hour drive down Shafer Trail in Canyonlands.

I envy you living so close to that beautiful scenery. Have you ever done any startrail images there?

I am a miserable star photographer. We went to Dead Horse for the Milky Way and I managed to leave my star tutorial on an iPad that we could not access because there was no signal.

If I lived anywhere close I’d be shooting star trails over all those amazing landscapes.
