Remembering 9/11 in Washington, DC with no camera

Like most participants in this forum, I have thought about where I was and what I was doing on 9/11. My office was directly across the street from the NW corner of Lafayette Park in downtown Washington, DC; a clear view of the White House. A colleague came into my office and told me to turn on the TV; that a plane had collided with the World Trade Center. Little over an hour later, we went to the top floor of the building which had a clear view to the area near the Pentagon where we were able to see the smoke rising from the Pentagon. Before long, the street in front of our building had police officers patrolling with automatic rifles.

While the mental images are still clear after 20 years, I have always wished I had a camera on that day. This was before the days of smart phones with cameras. I always had an interest in, and appreciated photo journalism. I had taken some courses and did year book and student newspaper photography. There were so many pictures that could have been taken to capture the horrible memories of that day in downtown DC.

My wife's Mom and her sister were on a vacation for her sixtieth birthday which ended up being spent volunteering with the Red Cross and helping to distribute food and water to survivors and recovery crews in Washington DC.
