Astro photography requires a wider angle lens, I would recommend the Sony 20 mm 1.8 lens. It has an excellent reputation and is extremely sharp.

The Sony 24 mm would also be an excellent lens.

These two lenses (Sony 20mm and 24mm) are outstanding lenses and are frequently used for astrophotography with full-frame cameras. With the crop factor, they would be at 30 and 36 mm, respectively, which means they are probably a little wide for this purpose. Others have suggested wider lenses that may work better for this purpose.

One limitation with the Sony APS-C system is that there are not many outstanding ultra-wide lenses. There are some good ones by third-party providers, as others have pointed out. There are a number of good ultra-wide lenses in the full-frame segment, but when used on a APS-C body they aren't quite ultra-wide anymore because of the crop factor.

Certainly. I was just was responding to someone's incorrect claim that the a6300 was stabilized and therefore any lens would be stabilized.

I’m looking to buy a prime lens for my Sony A6300 for astro photography. Low aperture and around 35mm. Any suggestions. Should I stick with Sony or sigma and does sigma support lens stabilization? Thanks, Walt.

35mm is not nearly wide enough for a crop sensor. It’s really not even wide enough for full frame.

Lens stabilisation should be turned off when using a tripod.

Although I don't shoot astro photography my Sony lens stabilization is never off. Feel free to look up my images and judge for yourselves.

I do know that the Samyang 12mm lenses pair really well with the MSM star tracker, for a reasonably priced, easily carried astro kit.

I think that this poses a bit of a dilemma. Most astrophotography is done on 12 to 24mm lenses on full-frame bodies or 8 to 16mm on APS-C bodies. Street photography generally is done in the range of 28 to 50 mm (19 to 33 mm on APS-C bodies). So you are going to have a hard time finding one prime lens that does both. Perhaps your compromise would be a 16mm lens for your APS-C body. A lens like the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary might be a good fit.

Good point. So if it were me, I'd buy two lenses. Save on the astro lens, and splurge on a landscape lens with stabilization, which the OP would like and the 16mm Sigma doesn't have.

A good candidate would be the Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III A-VC RXD

Well, if the Sony A6600 is an a mount camera you could always look at the Minolta lenses that would would great for this camera and they would be cheap enough for you.

Go with a E/A mount lens and look for Minolta lens for that camera. Though the Minolta lens are old they are great lens and will work great on a Sony camera.
