My new Canon 50 mm 1.8 STM lens makes a slight whirring sound when it focuses. Is that normal? The 24-105 mm lens does not make that sound.
I bought the 50 mm lens to shoot in lower light conditions. Did a test shot with it at 2.2 mm. I shot the same picture with the 24-105 mm lens at 4 mm. The iso on the 50 mm lens 2.2 mm shot is lower but the pictures look comparable. It was a bit disappointing. Is this what you would expect?
Check the depth of field between the two images.
Best to use f/2.2 or ƒ2.2 instead of 2.2mm. ƒ-stop is not measured in mm.
The noise is normal.
My 50stm makes sharp enuf pix. How it compares to my 24-105/4.0 will never be known. I never compare different lenses against each other. The only thing I ever compare a lens against is expectations.
My 50stm met expectations. Maybe mine is typical or maybe I got a pearl ... it’s a cheap lens so sample quality might be a wild card.

50mm prime lenses are among the easiest to design and tend to be super sharp and have low distortion compared with most zooms. They are generally reasonably priced unless you want something exotic like Zeiss. The trade off is working with a fixed focal length.
It depends on the noise - hopefully you bought the lens at a reliable store such as B&H - I would call the store and ask for a replacement due to the noise.
Pretty much all modern 50's are very sharp. It's one of the easiest lenses to design optically.
I suspect your zoom is also very sharp...so your eye isn't going to see a lot of difference even at 100% in editing.
But you may see some differences on the edges and corners...look there.
So, in the end...for not much coin...you gained a very sharp lens and the low light capability you sought.

I’m a little confused as to what was disappointing between the 2 images you shot or what you are expecting to see. Perhaps posting the photos and specify what you were hoping to see. If you have 2 photos taken at 50mm, one at f2.2 and one at f4, all else equal (except adjusting ISO), I wouldn’t expect much difference other than depth of field and bokeh.
Perhaps you could shoot the 50mm at f4 to compare with your 24-105 (at 50 mm f4).

There is nothing wrong with your lens, it is different than the 24-105 in construction and manufacture. However, if you are in doubt return your Nifty for another one.
That's hilarious! Especially the Made in China note on the label.
I'm a big fan of old guitar amp restorations. There are several folks on Youtube (D-Lab, Fazio Electronics, and Uncle Doug channels come to mind) who specialize in repairing vintage tube amps. It's a hoot to see how simple those amps are, yet how incredible they sound.
