I currently have a Canon 70D with two lenses. The EFS 18-135mm STM and the EF 70-300mm L lens. I mostly take landscape, wildlife and travel photos. I really like what I have read about the Canon R6, especially interested in having IBIS feature. I wish the R7 was available, so I could see what features this camera will truly end up with. I suspect that the chip shortage will end up delaying the launch of the R7. I want to keep my EF 70-300mm L lens, it is heavy but has great image quality. I have read reviews on both Canon RF 24-105mm STM and Canon RF 24-105mm L. I am trying to watch overall cost and would also like less weight, but still care a lot about image quality. Has anyone had bad experience with the RF 24-105 STM. Also, will the R7 have IBIS? I realize that the R7 is APS-C format but don’t want to wait too much longer to buy something new. Thank in advance for your input.

Ron, it seems to me that you are just trying to justify purchasing a new camera.

I feel sorry for you. That is one of the most severe cases of GAS that I've ever seen. I see only one solution by the R6 and trade on the R7 when it comes out

I have an R5 and use the variable aperture RF 24-105. Not sure if that is what you’re calling an STM lens. I love it for an everyday walk around lens bc its small and light with the perfect zoom reach for me. I find the photos reasonably sharp for my use; I primarily do landscape. I have been thinking of the RF 24-105 L lens though with the constant aperture of f/4. The variable starts out at f/4 for 24mm, f/5 for 50mm, f/6.3 for 70mm and 7.1 for 85-105mm. Depending upon how much very low light photos you take you may or may not need the L lens. I’m going to try one out by renting and see; they’re hard to find to buy. The size and weight stats are higher but perhaps not that much for me.

It will be interesting to see how an R7 is actually specked; I need IBIS with my older shakier, female hands plus a touch screen. I switched to Canon RF for the fast autofocus and touch screen - Nikon Z had wonderful button layout and touch screen but slow autofocus (Z7), Sony had fast autofocus but No touchscreen and layers of menus (a7 R4). I would recommend renting one when they first come out to see if you might even like it before buying, or place an order the 1st day and cancel if you try first and don’t like it. I expect there will be lots of folks potentially looking to order.

I think IBIS is one the best features of mirrorless cameras, turning all older adapted primes into IS-enabled lenses. Canon's first two mirrorless EOS Rs didn't include this feature, then their next two higher-end cameras included the feature. I have a suspicion Canon will eventually create differentiated products with and without this feature, but that is when / if they build out a lower-end line of mirrorless cameras, something that is not their current focus.

To your question and interest in the EOS R6, it's a 20MP camera, similar in pixel resolution to your EOS 70D. So, the features of the camera, including better ISO performance and other shooting tools, will be the main differentiators. Hopefully, your interest in the RF zoom lenses is related to dumping the EFS lens as the crop factor of this lens on an EOS R6 yields images of a step down to 8MP.

The IS-enabled lenses are additive to IBIS-enabled bodies. As all your interest involves IS-enabled lenses, you might also look at the older EOS R or EOS RP models, the idea being to save on funds. These put you in a higher resolution mirrorless body at a reduced price, and allows you to consider in 2022 (or later) if a cropped mirrorless ever arrives and at what price.

Finally, the mirrorless bodies are smaller and a bit lighter. But, when you've mounted a full-frame lens and possibly an adapter, the net difference in total weight to a DSLR is negligible. If weight is a driver, you really need to change sensor format, looking at non Canon brands in the micro 4/3 size.

Here is a place to start YOUR research:https://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm-stm.htm
https://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm.htm
I have the "L" model mounted on a Canon RP and it works very well for me.
I will pick it up and use it much more than I do the Canon 5DIV with a 24-70mm L f2.8
The "Eye Focus" is just Great with the RP and the 5DIV is . . . well let's just say that both have capabilities Far Exceeding my own.
Yet, Both have a place with me.
Best wishes and do what is best for YOU!
Smile,

Currently, Canon does not have a viable crop-mirror less and may never have one .....8-(

In the meantime just get a Sony A6500 with a good EF adapter ( the Sigma MC 11 will not work with EFS lenses), sell your heavy 70-300 L and get the Canon 70-300 IS II and put the extra money towards the Sony. You will then be ready for when and if Canon delivers ....I would also ditch your 18-135 and 70D and get a Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 to go with the Canon 70-300 IS II and then you CAN use the MC11 adapter.

So what is wrong with the images to get with your 70D? Too much cash burning a hole in your pocket book?

The EOS R5 will change how we think about mirrorless, how we think about photography, how we think about life.

It's all speculation about the "R7" for now. Canon has only given vague clues that something will be coming.... and it makes sense that they'd eventually launch an APS-C camera in the R system (and sunset the M-series around the same time).

All the talk about an "R7" points toward a top-of-the-line APS-C model. Essentially a mirrorless version of the 7D Mark II. As such, I would expect it to have IBIS and an AF system similar to what's in the R6/R5, or maybe even the R3. It would also have dual memory card slots (SD or CFExpress? Who knows?!) I would hope it will be able to use the same battery grip as the R5 and R6 use, too (and NOT be an ultra expensive model with built-in grip, like the R3).

But... and this is a BIG "but".... it's just talk. I wouldn't even call them "educated guesses" at this point. Maybe "wishful thinking" is more accurate.

Canon might be more inclined to introduce a replacement for the M50/M50II instead. That's been a very popular model (top selling mirrorless in Japan for some months), even with the very limited EF-M lens selection.

Of course, maybe they'll develop two different APS-C models in parallel and announce them at the same time (much as they did with the full frame R6 and R5).

But no one has any idea if or when that might be.

There's an RF 18-45mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens on the "roadmap" that might well be a kit lens for an APS-C R-series camera... But more likely an entry-level camera model. The top-of-the-line APS-C cameras usually are kitted with a more premium lens (much as the EF 13-135mm IS USM currently offered in kit with the 90D and 7DII).

There's also an RF 10-24mm f/4L USM lens on the roadmap that might be a crop design. (A full frame capable RF 14-35mm f/4L is now available.)

Both the 18-45mm and 10-24mm were supposed to be introduced sometime in 2021 or 2022... But, as you've noted, the chip shortage and pandemic have caused delays in camera and lens introductions.

Regarding the RF 24-105mm (two versions: a more expensive "f/4L, IS, USM" and a less expensive "f/4-7.1, IS, STM"), check out RF lens reviews at The-Digital-Picture.com. Bryan has reviewed pretty much all of them. You can compare image quality versus lenses you have now. There are also other comparisons, in addition to a highly detailed review.

I was thinking about the new stuff and the end result was my 5D IV is now my back-up camera. New learning curve with the 5R. Setting up a challenge but using it is great. Difference I'm not sure. Justification was hard. Convinced my self by see how many pictures on the D. Not sure of that either, just did it.
The jury is still out, glad I did it I guess.

You have a great camera/lens system already; continue to use it to its fullest and be patient. Do not go after EF or RF lenses for a crop-sensor camera; you'll be paying more and getting a heavier lens without ever using its full potential. If I was you and going to mirrorless, I would go for an R6 or R5 with that excellent RF 24-105 f4 L lens and after a year, decide if you really need the 70D anymore.
